I have always explained the Ren vs Maschine sequencer as such, based on my own usage:

MPC Ren/Studio--excellent for classic hip hop/R&B/Neo-Soul and contemporary hip hop

Maschine--excellent for dance music/electronic pop music and dirty south hip hop

Of course the lists above are not exhaustive. I have found MPC/Ren/Studio to work better when I am looking to produce a more "human" feeling track.

Maschine works best for me when I am looking to produce a more "mechanical" feeling track. I am not defining "mechanical" as a negative here, most hits today have a more mechanized feel.

I hope this helps you my friends.

yeah that roland MV analogy is spot on...

It certainly isn't as robust and straight to business as the mpc sequencer.... the way we're used to having it on the mpc and have always liked it for years. But I do like the maschine and the mv sequencer. They are different, and to me that is a good thing, it makes it less redundant and adds a bit of fun.

I didn't have that quantizing while playing thing last time i used the maschine, it was off... and then there was the button you push where you can pick full or half quantize. Kind of cool, but the beat pattern was so **** loose... I didn't wind up actually using it in the end.

ntalec wrote:To honest the sequencer on Maschine always makes me think about the MV.
It has a a lot more that it can do with swing etc but at the same time it also can create an overly complicated workflow.

Anyone who has owned either Maschine or the MV and figured out how to make the sequencer work more like the MPC knows it can actually be done.
Unfortunately they also know it's not really worth the effort it takes to do it when the MPC will simply do it.
No need to reinvent the wheel.

The twist to the story is that there are a lot of genres out there now that actually are easier to do on Maschine, FL Studio, Reason etc so there are people out there happy with the way the sequencer works.

Neither is really a reason for a YouTube rant or anything like that but I guess he needed his little moment.

100% agreee! This is exactly what I meant in another thread about features not being everything and enjoyment of use is more important to me. I used Maschine exclusively for a year straight and barely touched my MPC during that time. While I was able to make really dope shit with Maschine and sort of duplicate my MPC workflow, it just wasn't as enjoyable, nor as quick to get my ideas down.

I didn't play around with the Maschine much (maybe like 2 hours) but the one thing I didn't like at all were the pads. I much preferred my Akai LPD8 one's, and the pads on the Studio and the Ren are just DOPE.

I am so glad I waited for those jewels. And I do agree, the seqencer really has a very good and alive feel to it.

Ill be buying the new software. I'd consider the controller if it were half the price. In 2013, color lcds aren't that expensive to be making this thing cost $1000.

a $1000 is too much for just a controller ...imo.

Will the Maschine Software 2.0 be available separately?

I guess I'm different from most.
I can deal with $999 for the Studio easier than $99 for the v2 software.

I still find it interesting that NI is not doing a lot of info sharing on how it looks on the normal Maschine or Mikro.
I also don't understand how people are getting excited about v2 without knowing more about this.

Just seems like that v2 could be pretty clunky on the normal hardware based on how Studio driven it appears to be.

Could lead to a lot more mousing around on Maschine.

nope, check out some pics here: http://instagram.com/maschinetutorials
for the older controllers it looks just as tightly integrated as one could hope for :-)

DJ Hellfire wrote:Not exactly! Something about the MPC just knows exactly where you meant to put a note when you play an off note while quantize is on. Sometimes Maschine doesn't put the note where you intended.

I meant in relation to what peterpiper was asking. In other words, if you hard quantize to the quarter note so your kicks are on the 1 and 3 and snares on the 2 and 4 there will be no timing difference between the two. There's certainly no drift or sloppiness like the dude in the video is claiming. It's like you say, there's just a lot more to the swing in Maschine and getting the right feel. Being realtime is a major bonus.

Hopefully they've improved the nudging in Maschine for version 2.0. I'm hardly using quantize these days, so the ability to nudge notes around in fine detail is essential.
