One day people will realize 2 important things in life.
Software is and will always be a bad investment long term.
If you are using anything software based and it's not generating revenue you are at a lost the moment you purchase.
It depreciates like a crazy and is guaranteed obsolescence.
The second thing is that if you keep asking for change and improvements in a software product it will bite you in the @ss eventually if they deliver those request.
Either financially or in compatibility.
I would also say if you spend $1K on something like the Ren then you should be using it to make money.
Doesn't matter if you are a DJ making elements to use when you play or trying to be a producer, artist etc.
If not there are just far too many cheaper solutions.
The 1k, 2500, 2k they all go through it.
Last year I purchased a SP12 turbo for $225 on eBay, then saw another one sell for $200 and $250 within the same month.
While I agree in principle, I also think there is way more gray area on a subjective personnel basis.
Most of my software - hardware combos depreciated at a much slower rate. Used prices on my VS-700 one year after release was close to new prices. It's one thing for something to lose value over a couple of years or many years as most of the items you listed, something else for it to lose so much value after just one year. Had a different interface came about that I wanted a year after buying my VS-700, I could have sold it at a much lower loss.
As far as making money and music, this is way too subjective. If someone has the money and the passion, who is to say how much revenue they need to make off of it in order to be legitimated. I make a decent amount of money gigging, not enough to solely live on, but enough to where something like the Ren gets paid out of gig money. Of course, I don't use the Ren live, none of my studio gear is used to make revenue. And ironically the more gigs I have, the less time I have to work on studio stuff. But when I do have time I take the time to compose, try things blah blah.. And I feel like it helps me be a better musician even if it is not related to the music I play and get paid for live.
