This.
Also you could pop the top and make sure all the connections on to and from that little board are intact.

There's always the possibility of the pen drive not being compatible, some have strange little software for security that make them not work correctly.

Tried the fiddiling around. Was wondering about compatability.Would have thought it would at least light up even if............plus its the second pen drive that wont work.

Have you tried the hard drive in a computer to see if it is actually not working?
Could be something going on with the controller in the 4k since the internal drive stopped working and the USB as well.

I would try to determine that before going with a SSD as a replacement.

Is the optical drive in your 4k still working ok?

Good point altho the hd was old.Should really try and read it with a computer tho.Optical drive???

try formatting it on the pc first.. think there are a couple of different ways it can be done.. i think i used the FAT32 type, or what it was called

just back up your stuff first if there is something saved on it already

Optical drive = your CD or DVD drive in the MPC.

I actually have easier use of USB stuff than internal stuff.
Some internal drives had to be formatted FAT32 on the computer for the 4k to see them and format them, while various thumb drives, card readers and large USB hard drives all were able to be formatted or recognized with no problem.

I have a 500GB WD My Passport USB3 drive that I use on the front port and the 4k had no problem seeing it.

I basically save everything to the internal drive and the USB so that I have 2 copies.

Well that's still a good thing for sure.
Did you find anything obvious that was causing the internal drive not to work?
