Midi flow using MPC 1000

I purchased the MPC 1000 and it has 1 midi in and 1 midi out (not including USB)


I also own:
Focusrite Scarlett 18i6
Slim Phatty
Dave Smith Tetra
Microkorg (used also as midi keyboard.


My current set up is:

Focusrite Midi out to microkorg
Microkorg midi out to focusrite
Microkorg midi through to Slim Phatty or Tetra (depending what i want to use.)

However I tend to only use Slim Phatty or Tetra via the USB as an external instrument in Live 9.

Im quite new to MPC and Midi to be honest

Could you give me some pointers,

I would like to be able to use the MPC & Microkorg as midi controllers for the syths etc.

It has 2 MIDI ins and 2 outs, so I think you will get around this easily. BTW since JJOS2XL and up there is Multi-timbrality on MIDI in, which is handy for recording multiple channels. All previous OS's can only record 1 channel at a time. You might need that or no.

Im still struggling to get my head around somethings.

I have

MPC 1000 (2 x Midi I/O)
Focusrite 18i6 (1x I/O)
Microkorg ( 1x I/O & Thur) (No USB either)
Tetra ( 1x I/O & Thru)
Slim Phatty ( 1 x I/O & Thru)

What Im wanting from my set up is to use the Microkorg as a midi keyboard for, Slim Phatty, Tetra & Ableton Live.
Previously this hasn't been a problem as I set up each synth as an external instrument in Live (via USB) and only have Midi Din leads from Microkorg to Focusrite.

However I have just bought my MPC and want to sequence the instruments outside of Ableton Live which I have seen on Youtube.

How can I have a set up where I can play all instruments externally from computer (as well as keeping Microkorg set up with audio interface to use with Ableton Live when needed)

Is this possible, or do I need to buy more midi keyboards for each modular synth? this defeats the object in having modular syths in the first place!!

Do I need to change any of the instruments from midi channel 1 etc?


Like I said, I can use then individually via USB recording into live - but I want to sequence play outside of Live using my MPC 1000.

yeah but what exactly you want MPC to do? you want to you it as sequencer for all? only for hardware? or as a drum machine (module) seqenced by Live?

I want to be able to use MPC as drum machine - but also allows me to send separate sequence patterns to each synth.

So essentially I would have everything playing, not using PC

But then at the same time have the Microkorg still being able to be used as a midi keyboard with ableton live when required.

instead of having to unplug midi cables each time - just wanted one set up that works.

as well as

Microkorg out > MPC 1IN
MPC OUT A > Focusrite IN
MPC OUT B > hardware synths in chain

Just try out few connections, and see which work best for you.

Tetra uses 4 MIDI channels for 4 part multi-timbral.
Slim Phatty uses 1 MIDI channel.
MicroKorg uses 1 MIDI channel.

If you link any of these together on the same MIDI chain, they need to be set to use separate MIDI channel numbers.


You also need a way to route the Focusrite MIDI In to Focusrite MIDI Out when using the MicroKorg with the MPC.

microkorg thru to tetra in
tetra thru to slim phatty in.

If it doesnt work then I might buy a Midi Splitter. 1 in 4 outs.

Then I can have midi out of microkorg (midi keyboard) to 4 separate instruments midi in and set different channels. (mpc, audio interface, slim phatty & tetra)

The MPC out to microkog in - microkorg thru to MPC.
