Korg & electronic gadget kit company LittleBits have announced a modular synth kit that’s designed to let you do music DIY using prebuilt modules.

Here’s what they have to say about it (Googlish):

A set of twleve modules, Synth Kit allows you to assemble an analog modular synthesizer by connecting a small magnet to each module. In addition, It was developed based on a circuit that was used in the famous analog synthesizers Korg part of the module.

The type of module of Synth Kit, there are (× 2), filter, envelope, delay, keyboard, micro-sequencer, mix, split, random, synth speaker power (power supply module), oscillator.

You will be able to build up a modular synthesizer that can be modified any number of times. Moreover, there is a scalable littleBits system, building a synthesizer more powerful by combining Synth Kit can include multiple. Also, the system making it by incorporating littleBits other modules, using the mechanical light or is freedom. Of course, cumbersome wiring and soldering, programming is not required at all.

The kit offers a variety of synth modules:

Power
Oscillator × 2.
Random
Keyboard
Micro Sequencer
Envelope
Filter (MS-20 style)

I'll pass, but I can see these being sweet for people less experienced with electronics and synthesizers.


REALLY hope they release the electrical schematics for these, though. (I could see them doing that, with how Korg has been with their other analog stuff recently)
Nice, professionally designed synth modules made to run off a single 9V supply? AMAZING. :shock: :nod:

So, littleBits is like electronic lego for kids, with a whole lot of modules available other than these Korg modules. Interesting!

This is cool, but they should have made them with some soldering involved.

I have to clap for Korg for revolutionizing the analog synths. I remember mono synths being cheaper than a poly but still over a grand.

eh, it would have been pretty much just the pots and maybe the connectors.

At this size and price, everything is surface mount. And if you have a good soldering iron and lots of practice, you can maybe do tiny surface mount stuff. But multiple SOIC (or other package) chips on each board, and a bajillion tiny like 0402 resistors, gah... :shock:

Yeah I hope so too. I believe they would succeed if they did. All of the demand for their newer analog gear since the Monotron has gotta be even bigger now than it was then. All the profits made between the Monotrons, Monotribe, MS-20 Mini, and Volca series can make Korg confident enough financially to design more larger, feature-robust gear at some point in time. Roland and Yahama won't compete. So that puts Korg in even more of a favorable position to forge forward.

I pre-ordered one of the kits awhile back because I A) love synthesizers and B) was intrigued by the whole littlebits platform. The kit has everything you need for $159 but you should be able to buy the pieces individually in the future and expand. I thought the whole idea of modules you fit together like legos would be fun and creative in a faster, more physical way than designing something in Reaktor. Indications are good that Korg will release schematics for each piece, meaning they could potentially be (more easily) hacked into other projects and added to circuit-bent gear.

I also own a monotron delay and these little Korg items are just fun to play around with. The kits were supposed to start shipping out yesterday so hopefully I'll have it soon to post if it was a waste of money or not. ;)

I greatly prefer this project to the original LittleBits.

These modules are abstractions; when using them, you don't really know what's going on electrically.
And that's fine, for a synthesizer. You're concerned with making sound, not with exactly what's happening in the circuit. You can learn the basics of analog synthesis, and have a lot of fun experimenting, without knowing what a resistor, a capacitor, a transistor, an op-amp, etc, actually do.



But the regular LittleBits, they're apparently supposed to be teaching the basics of electronics in general. But they really don't. They teach, "pop this magic battery board onto a board that has an LED on it and it magically lights up" and "connect it through a magic distance sensor and you magically control the brightness of the light by moving your hand".

Hell, they don't even get at all at the fundamental part of an electronic circuit: the fact that it's a circuit, you have to make a complete loop containing the battery and your other components to get electricity to flow.

Add to that the fact that it's over a hundred bucks for a very limited kit (just a battery, some lights, a knob, etc), and I feel like it's pretty useless.

I disagree; I view littlebits as the equivalent of a scripting language for programmers. It's not quite the level of detail or control as Assembly, but much easier for someone new to pick up and make something interesting with. And there's always the chance that when the barrier to entry is lowered, it'll inspire people to learn more.

An even better analogy is Reaktor itself. There's never a need to do more than grab an oscillator and hook it up to a filter and some inputs and outputs and start building something. Drilling down into the code level inside a module is like actually designing the circuit itself. Having to design a module from scratch, at the code level, every time you wanted to mess around with an idea, would be tedious. Sometime a little abstraction goes a long way.

And the littlebits synth kit is amazingly cheap; a single oscillator module from synthesizers.com costs $40 more than the entire complete Korg kit!

I see LittleBits as a new type of Lego for kids.

They do not need to know the principles of engineering to build things out of Lego, just like they do not need to know the principles of electronics to build things out of LittleBits.

I think it is supposed to get them interested in building electronic circuits, the theory and detail can come much later.

My kit arrived today. First impression: it's a very fun toy. It really is like Legos. You can configure it to do one thing and while it's still powered on and running simply grab bits and swap em around. Of course this is breaking the connection but it's sort of like, I dunno, plugging in patch cables. . . .

A side effect of playing around with it was I then turned to my miniBrute/RE20 Space Echo combo. Small ideas that came to me from messing with the littleBits definitely triggered bigger ideas with the more powerful gear.

Very fun stuff.

Ah, but I agree, you don't need to know how a VCO works, or how a software oscillator is coded, to learn about those basic sound design principle. And that's why I do like the Korg Littlebits platform; you don't learn about electronics, but that's good, because it's not supposed to be teaching electronics; you get straight to the point, analog synthesis.

The regular (non-korg) littlebits, sure, they can get kids interested in electronics and can be a fun (albeit expensive) toy.
But my problem is that they're trying to say that the littlebits can teach about real electronics, which I just don't see.
also, I don't see Legos as really an equivalence; there's just so many more possibilities in Lego than there are in the regular LittleBits.

My 2cents on it, as someone who's interested in electrical engineering and has had experience in trying to teach electronics to kids. it's just how I personally see it.
