So I was on twitter today and noticed there was a tweet that kept getting retweeted, so I thought I'd check it out.

Yes, it's a Maschine Studio vs Akai Mpc Renaissance post, but it's unique imo

Most of the time producers are talking about features and such. This guy shows numbers and trend growth.

I don't have a preference for 1 over the other, but I thought there was some good points brought up, especially showing the trends and numbers.

Where do you guys see the Mpc heading? I'd like to see how Akai responds to Maschine Studio....But what could they do? It seems like their always a step behind.

Numark cannot catch up with the NI user base and with plummeting retail and resale value they'll be fortunate to hold on to what they have. Their advocates can't keep reaching and referring to where Maschine was at the same time in it's life cycle. The fact is that they knew where the market stood and they chose to enter it with sub-par product. The price is being paid for that now.

I totally agree that the marketing side of things is where their biggest challenges will lie. I consider the marketing of Ren a misstep, and I think that's what's costing them most. Sure the product needs some enhancements, but like the blog reads - they got a bunch of old school producers together to market this thing, when IMO, that wasn't a good idea. LOL - when Marly Marl said "the pads light up so if you're making a beat in the dark, you know what pads you hit". I'm paraphrasing, but if I were Akai I would have never let that video see the light of day.

Just seemed like a series of bad decisions from a marketing perspective, and I think they're still making them now (i.e. - that Element launch).

The product, I still believe it's marginal - but BIG caveat - *for what I do, I believe it's marginal*, and again, my opinion is that they focused on people making two bar loops of kick, snare, hi hat and a sample (and that's what you see in many of those MPC minute videos).

When in reality, this could very well be the centerpiece instrument of a studio - but first they have to market it as such - drop all this "iconic" workflow rhetoric and get the marketing game together. Keep the product updating with more than "old school", beat-maker features, and they'll catch up over time. But at this point, it's an uphill battle. And like this blog questions... do they have enough time?

My .02.

Both of these guys grew up on MPCs. & their music was pretty much the same. What they do now on the Maschine, they were doing on the MPC, so it's not about the capability of the equipment.

Most likely someone gave them a bunch of NI Tshirts & asked them to perform at an NI event somewhere.

this is like a continuation to the thread I started "what is the future of the Mpc Renaissance"..

This article is a nice read though.. certain things I also noticed with the Mpc Ren videos.. Marly Mar, and all these hip hop producers that the younger generation don't even know.. and the quality of their none hd videos etc.. kind of late like blackberry

That's funny as hell

One guy says Mpc fanatic and jerhrome are the same person

Justin Aswell, I wonder how long he's been finger drumming

Good points, I don't think I've seen the video with Marly.

Akai is trying to sell Mpcs to 40 year old men. Many of which have moved on from music production, are not going to buy anything new anyway or have moved on to other tools and are over the Mpc legacy.

 to funny,
it reminded me of DJ K.. and your Boi D.. on youtube, lol

^ wow, we've been telling him that for years.... I always thought he had a mental thing that wouldn't let him even hear that opinion.

But it isn't even just those products where numark is shit... it's every numark branded product (garbage quality dj products) it's alesis, which now makes crap usb mixers... and the old legacy designs are converted and rebranded/repackaged to modern akai products (the speakers, keyboards, and more) ... and every hardware mpc akai made since numark owned it they **** up on and left unfinished. the 1000 pads and OS, the 2500 os and shitty tact switches, the 500 os and shitty components such as ram clips that break off... shit pads. The 5000 shit os.. it's like you can find where they cut a corner on every product they make....

I mean, cool if the price is right and the problem is known... and you are okay with the said cut corner.... but it's like you gotta learn the hard way about that company when buying a product by them brand new.

 That's his forum. It was started after gearslutz had enough . They tossed him and all of his post. soon after he started his forum where he can be in complete and delete anybody that says that Numark is anything but angelic.

That shipjump text has to fake. Jah would write a lot of ish but he would never write that even if he switched over and held by gunpoint. It reads like some of the scraps in this forum.

I still talk and converse the same as I did in years past. That doesn't make the old Motorola white brick any less obsolete even if it still functions from a technological (not artistic) standpoint.

Yes, but I think it is more in response to not being able to control discussion here.
