If I had to, u might want to get a software bpm, the tap tempo will work if u use it right, but i think its more important to find a good tempo for the sequence yr creating. I usually start at like 85-105 depending on how fast I think it will be. I start playing pads until I get something I like then record it. If the recording ends before I've hit all the pads i want, then i slow it down, if there are spaces or I ended before the sequence I make it slower.
Another trick I saw (and maybe theres something on youtube) is to get yr phrase looped perfectly. If you know how many bars it is u can drop it in a sequence of the same length. Play it. If the sequence BPM is faster than the Loop, the loop will cut off, if its slower, there will be time left over, so adjust accordingly.
