Discuss Akai's iOS apps iMPC & iMPC Pro
By coolderb Tue Nov 19, 2013 4:32 pm
The answer may have been revealed in this heated discussion in the official Akai support forums:

http://community.akaipro.com/akai_profe ... us_in_impc

Basically it says Akai agreed to it because they would receive a percentage of Tabletop in-app purchases. So, the iMPC customers have to deal with using a deliberately crippled app. so that Akai can put a few more pennies in its pockets. Very interesting.....

Tabletop is a closed environment.

I've had convos with Retronyms reps on Facebook, they're off on their own ish...most times when my questions got really direct they would just vanish from the convo.

I think it's as much arrogance on their part as it is financially motivated. And Audiobus support and such things shouldn't have IAP profit considerations anyway. It's a freely available API and if you refuse to use it you're kind of middle fingering your user base.

Not to mention Retronyms ripped off Tabletop from the Flash based online Audio Tool environment.

coolderb I know I always seem salty in a lot of these threads, but IOS just has so many ready examples of not making a big deal of supporting API's like Pasteboard or Audiobus support it's frustrating.

Yep, and to compound matters their implementation of InterAppAudio is lame. iMPC works as a host only. Why are you gonna make an app. with no DAW capability whatsoever a host?! If anything make it so that we can use it to create beats and send them to a real IOS DAW such as Auria, Beatmaker or even Garageband. Beatmaker, even though it has pretty decent DAW capabilities acts as both an Audiobus host or input/instrument.

Akai needs to get with the program.

Metatron, trust, I fully understand your frustration with Retronyms and iMPC. I'm the same way. I was even banned from the Akai support forum for expressing my frustration by that J.Sandeen character, Lol.

I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that Akai and Retronyms will not change. To do so now would be to admit that they were greedy, deceptive and just plain wrong. Moog, Arturia, Korg, Propellerhead and even Apple (Garageband) realized the benefit to end-users of implementing Audiobus yet Akai and Retronyms refused and made nothing but lame excuses. Their latest being "…well if Audiobus adds IAA there will be no need for us to add it..". Sure, keep passing the buck.

On a brighter note, I'm really starting to dig Beatmaker2. They are consistent with their updates. They bring a lot to the table. They almost bring too much lol, but after checking out some Youtube videos on routing various apps into Beatmaker via Audiobus it starts to make sense. Beatmaker is a beast!

Word coolderb. A BM2 update dropped today I think. It's funny I was down with Beatmaker from v.1 and Intua never would speak in their own forum. People thought BM2 was the Dretox of iOS apps. And then BAM they dropped it. So I assume it's a small team that prioritizes development and hoped for a forum like we have here where the people just sort each out with issues and techniques.

I''m still trying to figure out why Retronyms/Arturia didn't get Tabletop support in that new SEM synth app.

There's a thread here in the archives in which someone went and talked to Sandeen in the middle of the thread when it was popping off hard on page one. They pasted his quote, and I pointed out, this rep doesn't even what multi core operation is. On the Alesis site in a I/O Dock thread he clearly has never even heard of MIDI SysEx until he looked it up... :Sigh:

Akai clearly has cats with marketing degrees who know nothing about digital audio working as reps.

EDIT - from Intua's FB page "There is a bug with BeatMaker 2.5.2 on iOS 7 - Do not update ."

I don't do facebook and I'm glad I saw this before updating.
I'll wait on it, thanks for the heads up.

Anytime homie. Actually with all the developers pages I've liked on there I use it as a DAW newsfeed mostly. They'll fix it in 7-13 days, the approval being the delay. Intua's good on that stuff.

Intua floated this from a user -

Temporary fix for 2.5.2:

1. Open iOS Settings app
2. Locate Notification Center
3. Locate BeatMaker2
4. Turn off everything there

Not too bad for a temp fix.

Considering how Nukai keeps dropping the ball with everything, I'm losing interest in the iMPC in favor of my MPC2000. I'll take old technology over half-assed technology any day.

iMPC was cheap anyway and to expect alot from it was probably just wishful thinking.

Beatmaker 2 is a MUCH better investment. One of those investments where your like "Why the hell didn't I do this sooner?" and "OH SHIT, this things does everything I need!".

I have had nothing but success with everything I connected to and ran beatmaker 2 with. Zero problems and that leads my experiment beats even further when trying to do other stuff in BM2 that I don't normally do.

No doubt. I agree with you. I wouldn't expect much from Akai, though I've seen cheaper apps get tons of updates, like Propellerhead Figure for $1.
Beatmaker 2 would've been cool on the iPad. So I passed up on the holiday offer for the iPhone version. Maybe I'll buy an iPad this year if I don't go too crazy with the analog gear on my list.
