emu emax whaat yall think?

there is one on my local craigslist for $100 w/ 40 discs... worth it? He says it works great and he was the only owner soooo I should be good. any comments?

edit: this is more of a I'm buying it regardless post, but the people that have it what do you think about it? comparable to the s950/sp1200 of completely different from either? i already own a 950 I figured another 12bit cant hurt

Never had one, but would love. But heard it, and in my opinion it does sit somewhere between SP1200 and S950, can sound very gritty (more then SP) or decent clean, depending on sample rate you choose from. It has also nice flexible filters what SP doesn't have. If for anything else, I'd cope it just for these things alone.

100 bucks? What a steal..

Don't sleep on it, you better snatch it up quick or someone else may do before you count to 1 2 3.

P.S. Try to do a search in "Other Samplers & Beat Boxes" section, it has dozen of topics dedicated to this beast, pretty good and informative reading.

it is gonna sound gritty for sure - its a classic.

keep in mind those were designed to be more like synths than drum samplers, so will have a lot of synth parameters and be very powerful with short, waveform loops.

If I were you I wouldn't waste time here in the forum and pick up this machine.

You talk about the emax I right? Rack or keyboard? (well it doesn't matter. both are worth the 100$)

Yeah cop that joint at $100 for sure. I never had one but I have licensed versions of all those discs for Kontakt and those discs have a lot of great sounds.

after talking with her on the phone briefly, she said that the hard drive doesn't work so I wouldn't be able to sample into it. But that doesn't make sense to me because she said that floppy drive still works so couldn't I just save my samples on the floppies?


any words on this ^ would help.

Not sure, I think it's 512k storage on a HD Emax one. The II has more memory.

sounds weird. As long as there's no problem with the RAM you should be able to sample with it.
The question is: Did she really talked about the HD or did she talked about the RAM?

she may be referring to only having the os on the hardrive...
so if drive is busted you cant boot it

easily solved by loading from floppy drive

Great sounding sampler...greate if you sample some pads into the emax...turn on some slowly opening filter and the noisy chorus on...

But I m not using it too much...still very underrated..I ve made a sampling video a few years ago using the emax

Yeah it is truly awesome.I have never seen this in a sampling video.

The old ASR-10 VHS vids have the Ensoniq dude sampling a rifle in his backyard.

I made a playlist on my YT profile and I think I blew the spot...they vanished.
