Why the odd midi mapping?

i can't work out any correlation between the mpc midi pads and the relative pitched note they trigger on the midi scale.

i wouldve thought the pads would have gone up the scale in a linear type fashion, but i cant actually see any recognisable pattern?

anyone have the answer?
