You definitely want to move to a CF reader. So much more reliable than zips.

If you search the archives here to find a cheap compatible reader you'll have to probably make your own mounting tray and drill a couple holes. Or buy the MPCStuff ready to roll kit, bit that is way more expensive. Dead easy install though. Those ones use the XL OS 1.20 and top off at 1GB capacity. You use 2GB cards formatted in the XL to 1GB. 2GB cards are more available than 1GB ones and actually cheaper.

The DIY route is well cataloged here, and SimonInAustralia is well versed in the particulars of the cheaper CF mods. But yeah major upside going to CF over zips.

I got a IDE to CF reader myself. Equivalent to about 15 US Dollars. Only had to drill two holes which was actually a lot more simple then I ever would of imagined. I thought about trying to hollow out an old Floppy drive and mounting it in there to be easier, but that looked MUCH more difficult.

But really it just a simple plug swap once you mount it. I've guided several people with pictures though PM who were able to do it. Also very nervous about it. But it's almost as if the bottom of the MPC 2000XL was designed to fit a larger head sheet metal screw haha! Because of those extra wide holes.

Seriously it's as easy and holding the reader in the position you want it, take a paint pen or something to mark the circles where you need to drill, then carefully and slowly stick a sheet metal screw on a power drill and drill it though (Creates a thread).

Mine is not hot-swappable which was not a concern to me because 1GB is so much space, I couldn't imagine running out and needing to swap in a single chune. But some people do like that option and understandably why.

If you think you want to tackle it, shoot me a PM k? Plus that feeling you get from sitting there on your machine thinking, yeah.. I did this. Imagine what else I could do with this skill I just learned!!
