Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

I want to record sounds from my MPC2000XL to MPC2000 with MIDI. I have two midi cables, one from the MIDI A on the 2000xl to the MIDI A on the 2000 (MIDI OUT) and another cable from MIDI 1 on the 2000xl to MIDI 1 on 2000 (MIDI IN). I cant figure it out when i use SHIFT+9 (MIDI.SYNC). How can i do it?

MIDI is trigger/modulation data only, no audio is carried over the MIDI cables. You're going to need a set of 1/4" audio cables and have to sample into the 2k Classic to achieve what you want. But generally speaking the 2 units can be synced to play in tandem using MIDI. So you really want both audio and MIDI I/O for full versatility.

You can transfer samples from one device to another over a MIDI cable, using MIDI Sample Dump Standard (MIDI SDS).

This is not really recording sounds, but transferring the sample as sample data, resulting in an identical sample file on the other device.

Is this what you want?

If so...

You need to connect the MIDI output of one device to the MIDI input of the other, and vice versa.

In your description above, you seem to be connecting the MIDI input of one device to the MIDI input of the other device, and the MIDI output of one device to the MIDI output of the other device. This will not work, you connect outputs to inputs, not inputs to inputs or outputs to outputs.

Connect the a MIDI out of one device to a MIDI in of the other, and vice versa, set the MIDI In: and Out: fields correctly in the DUMP fields on both devices, and select SEND or REQUES, depending on which way you are sending it, and it should work.

See page 3 of the MPC2000 Version 1.5 Addendum, and page 183 of the MPC2000XL Operator's Manual, for MIDI Sample Dump instructions.

Wow, thanks for the useful comments. I got it working now with the 1/4" audio cables (why didn't i think of that).

I just want to layer my drums in the MPC2000xl, and make 1 sound of it (I can do this when i record a layered kick, snare or hihat to my mpc2000 and record it back as 1 sound to my 2000xl. But this will work now with the 1/4" audio cables.

Yes, recording the audio signal from one MPC to the other seems to be what you want.

Since the 2000 and 2000XL do not have internal resampling, transferring the sample file/data via MIDI Sample Dump Standard will not allow the layered multiple samples to be combined into one sample, as an audio recording of the audio outputs does.
