General question about MIDI

suppose this MIDI set up :

synth1(OUT) ----> (IN)synth2 (THROUGH)------>(IN)synth 3

if synth1 and synth3 are both powered on, but synth2 is not powered, would MIDI messages still get transmitted from synth1 to synth3

now if i replace synth2 with a MPC1000/JJOS2XL (with for example SOFT THRU set to OMNI A) would i need to get the MPC powered up to get MIDI messages through the MPC ??

MPC will need power.

Not sure about synth, don't know if MIDI Thru is generally a direct electrical connection from MIDI In to MIDI Thru, that would work without power, or if there is any power needed.


EDIT: From this MIDI Thru info, it seems that a MIDI Thru circuit is active, so like Lamp says, both would need power...

Why you need a MIDI Thru Unit

Because MIDI connections use a type of current loop, a single MIDI (THRU or OUT) output port can only reliably drive a single MIDI (IN) input port - so, you should not gang MIDI inputs in parallel or series.

Although I think this thing is overpriced it will help in such a situation. A MIDI-splitter
