I am trying to hook up my MPC1000 JJOS1 with Reason as a controller, so I can trigger Dr. octo rex samples with my pads.

I have a midi cable from out midi A to midi in on my interface. I have set all the setting on Reason in the Advanced tab to my audio interface.
I have been messing with the settings in pad mode 9, I cannot get Reason to detect my MPC1000 at all. What am I doing wrong?

When I hit a pad on my MPC the midi in indicator light lights up, but Reason picks up nothing. Reason only picks up my interface when I hit play start on my MPC.

I'm on jjosxl so it might be a bit different but you can assign a different midi output for each TRACK in your mpc. I think your tracks midi outputs are turned off right now.

Reason doesn't need to "see" your mpc1000 . When you hit the pads it behaves like any midi keyboard except the keys are pads.

On your main screen you should have some sort of midi setting to mess with in the bottom right corner. Select the midi channel (1,2,3,4,5.....16) and the physical output you're using (in your case A) and that should do it.

Also in mode 9 DON'T select OMNI for the output A .....

Now in Reason you should be able to select the midi channel it receives , maybe you can select them all but i don't know this software.

MIDI on main screen is 1A. PC is Seq.
In mode pad 9. Sync out A (Master)
Mode: MIDI CLOCK
SEND MMC: OFF. Tried with OFF, and ON.

Don't need to do that unless you want to slave the sequencer of reason to the mpc i.e when you hit play on the mpc reason starts playing as well.

PC is Seq
in the mpc ? don't need to do that , it's for program changes.

I think your mpc is set up right . Now you need to do something in reason.

I just installed an old version of the software . In MIDI settings select the port and the midi channel you want to use your mpc with.

Now in advanced midi settings select the same input for the bus A .
If you check the top of the main page in reason you can see those 4 bus , select the first one and assign any instrument you want to it.

It's working fine for me , good luck.

Pref--->MIDI , not "advanced"

But maybe in a newer version it's not there.

Make sure the MIDI IN device of reason is set up correctly (first thing in main screen)

I don't have Pref> MIDI in vr. 5, but is this what you are talking about? If so how would I go about setting it up?

I have selected the correct midi input when I added the device in keyboards and control surfaces.

Prefs/Control Surface/Choose Add/Choose Manufacturer = Akai/Choose MPD32/Press Find/Press a Pad/See the Interface appear in "In Port"/Press OK/Create an instrument/have it in focus with the mouse/play it...

That's it. You don't even have an instrument loaded in your screenshot.

Man , first of all , how do you expect reason to make any sound if there's no instrument in there ?

and second of all , if you click on "channel 1" in the midi advanced settings , stuff will happen.....

But you have to tweak a little bit before asking.

Have you tried hitting MPC pads across the different MPC pad banks, not just pad bank A?

Are you sure the MPC track is set to MIDI, and to output to the MPC MIDI output port you have connected to the computer?

Do you have a MIDI keyboard that you can test with Reason, instead of the MPC?

He is on JJ OS1. The default pad assignments have pad 1A triggering the Kong pad 1.

And he has set the Out to 1A on MAIN. (I know him outside of here)

And yes, I told him to consider he has an issue with the MIDI Outs on the 1000. He tried out B as well.

But none of what he's trying to do requires the Advanced MIDI settings or even setting clock/sync settings as he simply wants to use the MIDI Out enabled PGM as a trigger controller.

I would run Snoize MIDI Monitor to make sure the MIDI note on/offs are coming out of the MPC and into the computer OK.

And/or test with another MIDI device such as a keyboard, to see if it responds to that.

Does Reason respond to any MIDI device that is connected to the computer, by default, does it need to have inputs specifically enabled, or setup in Apple Audio MIDI Setup?

Yeah he had a MPK go belly up, USB port broke I think. But he may have another keyboard which I'm hoping has a 5 Pin MIDI Out for exactly the trouble shooting you are thinking Simon.

I duplicated everything OS1, OS X, Reason. Only difference is he's Reason 5 and I ran 6.5. But the MIDI functions and setup are 100% identical on both versions. The only other difference is I used an E-MU MIDI interface he is using the MIDI on a M-Audio interface. And he sent me a screen cap from after he hit "Find" in Reason's control surface dialogue and it properly showed "M-audio" as the active port Reason was receiving on.

So I had to tell him he's either not targeting the Reason instrument properly or his MIDI Out is faulty. But as he said his MIDI activity light on the M-audio lights up, and Reason would not have found the pad press if that were the case.

I was able to make it all work on my setup in literally 5 seconds.
