MPC 1000/JJOS2XL
DSI mophokey synth.

as will be apparent, i am really not a MIDI expert ... :hmmm:
i am trying to play notes, or sequences or arpeggios on the mophokey synth so that at the same time a drum track (already programmed and loaded) on the MPC is playing, synced to the mophokey clock.

so far i understand the MIDI OUT mophokey ----> MIDI IN MPC
and i am in the situation where the synth is master and the MPC is slave.

but what special MIDI settings i should have on the MPC ?
and if any what MIDI settings i should have on the mophokey synth ?

thanks !!!!

Mopho out-----> Midi in , indeed .

synth is master and mpc is slave , you're right

Go to PAD9 Midi/sync menu and set "sync in" to (1) slave or (2) slave , (1) if your midi cable is in Midi 1 or 2 if your midi cable is in Midi 2.

Don't forget that your track 1 on the mpc will respond to midi channel 1 , track 2 to midi channel 2...etc .

Set the midi channel on the mopho accordingly .

I've never used the mopho so there might be something else to tweak in the synth...

good luck

and i forgot , set Mode on "Midi Clock" in the Midi/sync menu . Not sure what "midi time code" is , i never use that . Same thing for MMC :hmmm:

thanks for the reply !
what happen if i load a sequence made of say 5 tracks, and want this sequence (ie these 5 tracks simultaneously) to play in sync with the mophokey ?

With just the mopho and the mpc i don't think that's possible 'cause each track responds to a different midi channel . And you can only set 1 midi channel on the mopho , not several.

But i might be wrong.....

Now if you're using a DAW that's a different story . You can create 5 different midi tracks , all triggered by the mopho on the same midi channel input (let's say 1) , and then set each track with a different midi output (1 to 5) to play the 5 different tracks on your mpc .

checking into the mophokey MIDI implementation chart ( ) i just saw that MIDI SEND channels could be specified as 1....16, or ALL. assuming ALL is selected then mophokey sends on 16 channels which would cover easily most of my sequences ( 4-9 tracks max).
but i have not had a chance yet to check this in "real life".

Fantastic , i didn't know about that....that should do the trick.

Now , i don't know what you're trying to do exactly but maybe you should consider the other way around that is to say , slave the mopho to the mpc (the mpc becomes master) and then midi out mopho to midi in mpc , and midi out mpc to midi in mopho.
That's the most common setup when using a midi synth and a sampler/sequencer .

That way you can play and record your midi notes , midi events , arpeggios...etc from the mopho in the mpc and when you hit play on the mpc your drum tracks are playing and your mopho is triggered from the mpc because the midi data of the mopho is recorded in there on its own track.

MIDI Clock does not send on a channel.. so it doesn't matter what you set up the MOPHO to send as..

I prefer to sync my gear to the MPC clock...

If you do as Berlin says.(which is most common). make sure MIDI thru is set to off, so you don't create a MIDI feedback loop..

You should set the Mopho clock the sync to the MPC clock, not the other way around (in my opinion).

As you most likely would want to set the tempo for each sequence from the MPC, not the Mopho, and then have the Mopho sequencer/arpeggiator/LFOs/etc. follow the tempo of each MPC sequence.

The Mopho is mono-timbral, and monophonic, so it will only play one sound at a time, one note of that sound at a time, and on one MIDI channel at a time.

You can not send five different tracks from the MPC, over 5 different MIDI channels, to the Mopho, and have it playback 5 different sounds.

It can only play one sound, on one MIDI channel.

You need a multi-timbral synth, or multiple Mopho's, for multiple different sounds/MIDI channels.

The DSI Tetra, for example, is 4 part multi-timbral, so can play 4 different sounds on 4 different channels.

why is that ? MPC patriotism  or technical reasons ? If the latter please explain. thanks !!

Should be tighter timing on the internal MPC60 clock, rather than incoming MIDI Beat Clock from the Mopho.

Might be useful to have the tempo change when the MPC60 sequence changes, with different tempos in different sequences, rather than having to change the tempo on the Mopho when you want to change tempo.

have you ever tried the following:

Mpc Midi out into the Mopho, MPC as Master

then you just record the parts of the mopho as an audiotrack into your mpc and there you go! plus you got that synthline in yuor mpc so why not chop/slice/divide/reverse and so on

i would always go for Mpc as master!
