Mpc 2000xl and a s950

I think i saw a post here about triggering the s950 using midi from the 2000xl, cant seem to find it though. Any help ?

I did use the search engine to

MIDI out A of MPC to MIDI in of S950.

Set active track type on MPC from DRUM to MIDI, and MIDI channel/port to 1A.

Press MPC pads, S950 should receive MIDI note on/off messages from MPC.

Cheers chap, yeah all ready sorted the midi cable end of things (no sarcasm intended). So now i should in theory be able to trigger sounds on the 950 and use samples on the mpc at the same time ?

Yes, sounds right.

The MPC2000XL sequencer has 64 tracks.

You can set those tracks to internal drum programs and/or external MIDI channels/ports.

You can sequence internal drum samples on some tracks, and sequence external MIDI devices on other tracks.

The S950 keygroups can be set to different MIDI channels, so you can use it multi-timbraly, that is with a different sound on each of the 16 MIDI channels, controlled by multiple MPC sequencer tracks.

To the OP, How do you like them so far? Buying a s950 myself on Thursday and i cant wait to start messing around with this combo.

This combo is the shit! I already had a S950 before I got an MPC and used to sequence with the PC, but kept getting latency problems.

So a few weeks ago I finally bought a MPC and it took me practicly no time to figure the machine out (the S950 is also that easy btw). Combined with the S950 I got the same workflow as I had with the PC & MPD24 minus the latency.
Made a template for the MPC with the right midi notes, as they are not in ascending order originally. Saved to floppy, and Im good to go.

So the 950s midi notes are set up chromatic order? Good to know i already have a program for when i use a midi keyboard to play bass notes and stuff. How about layering drums? is it essentially done in the 950 of in the 2k with the simult option?

^^sure the concept of this type of sampler is to play instruments so it is chromatic.
to layer samples you'll have to put them to the same keyrange which is done in the program menu.
The program is a "container" of keygroups which are "containers" for a sample.

For example
you set the sample 1 to keygroup 1
in this keygroup you define many parameters like volume, amp ADSR, filter, coarse and fine tune, output port, and also the keyrange on a keyboard. Lets say C3-C4 and the key that play the sample in original tune, lets say C3

sample 1 can now be played chromatic from C3 to C4

Now you can copy that keygroup to keygroup 2 and simply change the sample to your second sample there and you have created a layer.

Both samples will be played if you hit any of the key of the keyrange (C3-C4)

BUT. You should remember that the 950 can only play 8 samples at a time. So if you want to do massive layering the 950 might not be the best.

Killer combo if u know how to take care of the beast!

I have an S950 also, but I do nothing with it. In fact nearly everything I've done with other gear besides the 2000XL I've figured out how to do on the 2000XL. What are some advantages of having an S950 and 2000xl together? (I have one and have been debating selling it).

1. instant 12bit sound.
2. resampling is done in a few seconds on the s950 instead of hours on the mpc.
3. you can use the samples like (auto chromatic assign in the mpc) but with mute's/cutoffs.. works really nice with longer loops
4. LFO
5. LP filter
6. quick workflow/easy to use
7. and the timestretching.. also not taking hours

But my advice is to just try it and see for yourself. If it's not your thing you can always sell it anyways
