Hi All,
Anyone tried making a long extended sine wave Boom with the MPC 4000?

I am not talking about sampling a boom. I want to create one from the wave. (Obviously the wave is the sample) I was trying it with the VSynth and I was not getting it right. I was getting close. I need help. I get it in concept pitch change, but not in practice.

Ideally I want to create a long deep boom that fades out over two to three measures.

If you have made one from scratch, please share how.
I need my own Booooooom. The Korg Volca Boom is not sustaining long enough.

Sampling 301 class stuff you are getting into... almost single-cycle sample manipulation here.

I've made everything from farts to fiddles using the MPC only and the only thing that may be a hurdle is the sheer length.

It's not gonna be a 808 style boom because there is some analog resonance that will need to be added later on.

Try using a Sine with 8 or so cycles, pitch-down then loop the last 5-6 cycles...use the last cycles for the release. Play with the ASDR a bit and you may get close.

Get you a sinewave same as pictures above. Single cycle or up to as many cycles as Mike Boogie described above.

Make sure the beginning of the sine swings upward from zero exactly as show in the pic and then ending with an upwards swing back to zero. That pic is one full cycle, you know this already though.

I cleared all memory, found a synth sample, cut it down to a single cycle wave to where it looks the one cycle above, I got the ends looping smoothly when I hold the pad, went into programs, edit 1 and.......

Notably the release value for the length of the playback, the several seconds you want. I only had to mess with filter upper left block values and ADSR values to get what I wanted. Works fine, I now have a subwoofer shakin bass on a pad.

When I get home I will try this.
You would think it is easy to create on some gear but it isn't as easy as I thought it would be.
I spent about an hour with the Moog minitaur trying to get it to boom and it would not. Then I went to the Vsynth like I said but I could hear stepping in it. Which tells me I was doing it the wrong way.
I watched youtube videos but they were all on software and they all were the same as what you are saying in here.
Once I get this I am going to make a video about it.
The vsynth has booms in it but I want to try to make my own. The boom in the vsynth is not lonnnnnnnng either.
Anyone remember DJ Magic Mike? I am trying to amass a bunch of those sort of BOOoooms.
Now I will put your ideas into practice.

What I gave you is that 808 boom. The release makes it long or short.
Pop and clicks when a sinewave is looped sounds just like stepping. It's because of the start or end values of the wave are not exactly at zero. If both ends are at zero going in the same direction as the pic it will be a smooth seemless loop.

The six pole filter helps eliminate some or most of the click as well so it's not necessary to have a perfect loop but I always try to be accurate from the get go so everything else will work out the way I want it.

This is exactly the same thing but I used sound forge. It comes out a lot cleaner and true to form in SF because software can generate pure waves/tones. 4k can't generate shit by itslef, lol.

Using a square wave and adding a LP filter, will give you harmonic content. This will allow the "boom" to be heard on smaller speakers.

Do you have a particular DJ Magic Mike track you are referencing?

I´ll add to this formula >pitch envelope< with slight curve down so the BOOomm goes a little deeper as it sustains ..

Back in the day of DnB/brakes sub baselines where often done by simply playing a long decay 808BD .. they already include a nice volume and pitch curve..

but if You want do it manually and customize , I´d go with a solid tone and a pitch envelope, some ADSR on the amp and filter to shape the volume and timbre, then add layers if needed .. but I dont see much point in layers for this exsample unless you´d like one for sub (octive down) and one for air (reverb /noise) ..

honestly it might leave a bit to be desired trying to do this in a sampler because of the aliasing and resampling algorithms that have to come in and colour the sound, just by virtue of the fact that you are using a fixed oscillator. its all gonna depend on the engine, the source, and how they interact.

i would say start from a very low sine-tone sample so you have more resolution to work with, then use the envelope to pitch it up for the attack.

one technique that works incredibly well is to use a harmonically rich sample, say even a long noise burst, and instead of relying on the pitch envelope, you crank the resonance to the max and use the filter envelope. the idea is you -only- hear the resonant frequency (a sine wave).

this way you are literally synthesizing the tone instead of trying to recreate it with a fixed set of samples.

try it, experiment with the source sample - it works better than anything else i've tried on my xl. :mrgreen:

I used to do that in the 2kxl and it worked perfectly.

Then I got the 4k with more tools and I got accustomed to doing this same thing many different ways.

Wouldnt it be a good idea to add pitch envelope with negative amount so it pitches the boom down as the sound kicks in?

I'd certainly do that on top of the filter envelope
