Official Mpc4000 owner for the second time
White color, max ram, 160gb hard drive. New pad sensor. Going for the 8 outs next week

I been a hater for years cus I was so caught up in the sound of my sp1200 s950 asr10
But was always secretly wanting a machine that could do damn near EVERYTHING IN THE BOX

well finally got it back and it feels good. I had all the classic MPs over the years 60, 3,000 ,2000xl,
And I can't believe it took me about 10 years to realize the 4000 is the pefect machine for me. Lol.
I no longer have the sp1200. I still miss it from time to time. i unhooked the s 950 and Asr10 and I'm just rocking the 4000 and fantom xr in to my Mackie 32 8. And it feels so complete. I'm even thinking of trading my 3000le for a moog phatty or somethin. Less is really more. I'll never get rid of the 950 or Asr. Because they are some of the best sounding samplers ever made. But the 4000 Is my main weapon of choice now.

Had a million lines through the screen didn't help either.
Really glad the pad sensor change went well. Cus its a little tricky on the 4000

You had a 4k 2 years ago with a bad display?
Were you the original owner?

I don't think I would get rid of the LE for a small Moog, LEs are not circulating like they use to so it's pretty much a keeper.

What you should embrace is the power of the 4k as a same in same out type sampler.
Sample into the ASR or 950 then sample that into the 4k, I do it all the time with the ASR, SP, Emax etc.
I definitely keeps the character of the first device and once you get your workflow down you will see that it doesn't really add additional time to your process.

What's so special about an ASR-10 if you have the sample capabillity of the 4000 ?
I might be missing something but right now i don't see how it could outperform the 4000.

The ASR's sound coloring is universally accepted as "creamy" with some crack too as the best description. Anything you put in it sounds better coming out.

It's also a really featured sampler for being from 1992. But those features can be a bit to wade through. So yeah fair point Bomber4000 on the 4k being the more immediately accessible and powerful sampler with much more memory.

It is a misconception the 4k only sound crisp, clean and clinical. But the ASR along with SP's and the MPC60/3000 are from that place were almost everything you sample in sounds better going out, even with zero tweaking.

Thanks for clearing that up !
I assume that editing samples in the ASR10 is far from user friendly as you don't have a display or anything to monitor the process ?

It kinda takes me back to the days back in 1987 when i was sampling using my Commodore Amiga with 1 megabyte of memory and using Audiomaster to edit the samples and loop them.

No.

It's editing is fine. Don't "need" a waveform display. Ears are fine for that machine.
Looseness of the non perfect non wave display edited samples makes your production more of all your own (read:unique).

Real talk from Lamp as always. :nod:

For clarity, the advanced layering/crossfades/looped tail/sustain stuff on the ASR is where it's a little more work. But not many are trying to record and edit say a whole proper chromatic piano patch. But it is crazy how deep a sampler it is and what it's patches can do with 8 of them on a 1.44MB floppy as the library discs show.


Lamp is right, chopping with no waveform works fine and you can get used to it in minutes really.

Well, it's sound. I only use it for it's sound. If you run your drumkit through this beast, you hear Wu-Tang!.

Also other samples, it's colors are like lsd.

They are exactly the same, bare in mind that the keyboard version didnt ship with the SCSI controller out of the box but had is as an option, the rack version did have it standard.

Which one is the prefered choice ?

Ask yourself thay very similar question, it's up to your preferences. I like and own the keyed version as the keys are actually pretty good. (weighted I guess)

I have quite a few lines in my screen as well. JUst asking... did the pad sensor change you mention have anything to do with the lines in the screen or are you just mentioning two completely different things that have nothing to do with each other.

lol... i ask because im secretly hoping your going to tell me there is a way to fix the lines in the screen. Im thinking on gettting a new screen, but it really sounds like a hassle as i know it is on the 2xl... thanks..
