2000XL SPDIF outs making clicking sounds on my MOTU 828MK2

HAs anyone else had this problem? First of all the digital outs only really work at like 44.1 khz, but then on the right channel i hear this funny ticking sound. If i mute the right SPDIF channel it goes away and the left one sounds fine... Even after the sound it just keeps on clicking away..


Anyone know how to get around it?

Does this happen on all sounds, or just really loud ones?

No it's not from peaking, it happens all the time....it's like a continous clyclic clicking sound...happens only while the right channel is unmuted. As soon as i mute that channel, then it's inaudible. It cant be the cable, i just bought brand new ones for like $20.

Does this have something to do with the Akai units having a fixed sample rate?

I bought an 828mkII today, so I'll probably be able to test it tonight, but only with an MPC1000 though.

What samplerate do you use?

With The MPC 2000XL and a few other Akai samplers, the sample rate is fixed at 44.something. So i use the same setting on the 828MKII.

I dont know what the **** could be causing it. But when i put the sample rate up to 48khz the sound goes all trashy and lo-fi. Then when i put it to 88 and 96 all sound comming in from the SPDIF inputs dissapears altogether......

My 2000xl only outputs 44.1 KHz too, it's normal.

If you can, try testing the MOTU with another digital source, many cd and dvd-players have a digital out that you could use to test.

Is your digital-out on an rca or a 1/4 " jack? My 8-out board is not from Akai, but Mutec, and it uses AEB or something instead of SPDIF.

But to be honest, it doesn't make much sense to me to include the digital option on an 8-out board anyway. Most people are going to use the 8-out to spread their sounds on different tracks when they're recording. Since you can't mute the digital output, you'll have to unplug it or turn it down on you mixer as soon as you've assigned some sounds to the 8-outs.

The problem is that my MPC2000xl isn't working on 44.1
Only the left SPDIF channel works and the right is giving me some sort of cyclic click sound. Im only using 2 of the MPC's 8 outs cos i got other samplers but i wanted to send the main outs of the MPC via SPDIF, and free up some of the analogue Ins for my synth.

The 1k does have SPDIF, but I haven't been able to test it since my local computer store doesn't normally stock firewire cards. Damn.

The reason you're hearing this clicking sound is because the word clocks of both devices aren't synchronized. Set the 'word clock source' on the 828 to 'SPDIF' in stead of 'internal' and enjoy pristine, click free audio.
