Drum techniques

I really want to learn how to make that boom bap sound. I don't know where else to turn to for help. Can anyone link me a video?

First you need to start with good drum sounds. With the right punch and texture, they also have to fit together. That's why most people chop up drum breaks.

Then the focus lies on the groove and the pattern. Make it funky, make it swing.
For this again I refer to those funky drum breaks. Boombap hiphop was built on those breaks. Study your favourite hiphop drum patterns and drum breaks and try to copy that by experimenting. Using multiple swing settings or no quantising at all.

Just do a youtube search and you'll probably find tons of videos on programming drums.

Like the other guy said sample your drums preferably off vinyl. I myself don't use the drum libraries and I like hard kicks.

learning by doing is the best formula I guess. Just try to find your way to get THAT sound. Then again, of course you will find many videos on youtube explaining certain techniques and stuff

I've heard the beats you posted a few months back and they knocked. If anything your drums were too loose so I recommend working on your timing.

Your sample selection was dope too. If your not happy with your drums read up on effects usage and processing.

someone showed me something similar to this when i first started out and was struggling with basic drum patterns. i thought id share it with you and hopefully it will help you along.

that last kick drum at the end makes all the difference.

Messing with different velocities is a good tip.

And swing is to me often the relationship between bass and drums, analyze their relationship and try it out.

Tho the first step should be listening to drums you like and not just think "I like this" but instead ask yourself - why do I like this?

listen to what you like (patternwise) and just practice replicating it till you get it right

but yea, like lamp said its mAINLY about just puttin in the work

just load up some drums and bang out over the type of beats you like, or ur fav music, try and copy what u like and see how it sounds, use the lp filter and try and get the drums to fit together better, just jam out, u will get it..boom bap came natural for me, its those off beat sounding drums that are not quantized that were tough for me, i had to put on some dill or something with off sounding drums and jam over it to see what was really going on, it was so hard for me cause normally i try and be on beat, my fingers don't wanna hit the snare early, or the kicks and hats late, just keep jamming out over ur fav shit man..

Okay guys here is something I came up with. I basically chopped a drum break for this one. Snares with a hit hat. Hi hat with a quick kick etc. I still need to mess around with this technique a little bit more though. Thanks for the responses.

I wanted to emulate that boom bap sound. I would always hear it but I didn't know where to start so I can make it too. I guess now its just about messing around with breaks.
