Advice before I decide on purchase

I have previously posted on this forum about other MPC's (1000, 2500 and 4000), but after I have done a lot of research on all the MPC's, and thought about other equipment, my course has changed. So I have some questions that I have not been able to figure out.

First of all, I've come to the point where I believe an MPC 2000 will be enough. This is due to me wanting to use it to sequence, and record drums. The price is also good. I read the manual, watched tons of videos, and I liked it.

For sampling, I have looked into different workstations, and got a good liking for the ASR-10 because of its advanced sample editing, NDC, and I believe it could accompany the 2000 well. I'm still in the process of reading the ASR-10 manual, and up until now I've noticed that it's a really manual machine - I like that. I'm always broke, College hustle, so I got plenty of time.

+ I just love old technology (and hate most new, lol)

So my questions are:
Is this a good setup? And if not, what improvements would you advice me to make?
When it comes to a mixer, do you have any suggestions, or anything I should think about when deciding on which one to buy?

In addition, I could also mention (don't know if it's of importance) that I'm coming from Logic, Recycle, and a midi-keyboard. I'm just really tired of making beats on software, it is really a pain in the ass. Ever since I got into production, I've always wanted hardware, but I thought I'd give the software route a long ass run before I gave up on it. I'll use software for mixing.

I think I read this on the forum somewhere, I can't remember where, but I believe it was from you Lampdog. Are you saying that because the classic could only have one program active (max 64 samples) at a time, while the xl could have 4 (max 256 samples). That shit would f me up if I get into keyboard multisamples?

You cant go wrong having the 2000 or the XL in youre setup. The machines have limitations but that allows more space for creativity. You know youre favorite Kanye West beats? Those were made on the 2000. So the capability is there.

XL would be the better buy, many improvements over the 2000, both in OS and hardware.

I've been looking at the xl instead, and yes, I agree, it is the better buy.

Because I live in Norway, the import fees kills, and I won't be able to afford paying those fees anytime this semester because I'm moving to the states after another semester and really need to save some shit.. Scholarship doesn't cover up everything. But I was thinking, because I know some people in the states who could hold the equipment for me until I move there (sad I need to wait for so long to use it, but I can't afford, no choice), I could buy it and it gets shipped to them. That means I won't be able to test anything before I get there, and it is used, so it would be nice to test it but I won't be able before several months later. So I was wondering if anybody got any experience with buying from GC?

I've bought an MPC from GC.

If you search around they have some great prices on some things. They are pretty good at shipping as well. I live in Canada and we don't have access to the same used inventory as the state but I went on the US used site and just gave them a holler and they accommodated my needs and shipped it out fast. I have nothing but good things to say about them however, I'm sure there might be others who have had a negative experience with GC.

you mention funds being limited. by not being to test the equipment right away you are taking a leap of faith that it'll be delievered as described. Personally I'd wait til you're here then buy....what if the mpc or asr doesnt turn on, got damaged during shipping whatnot, you're out several hundred dollars at this point and cant afford to fix it or buy another. where as normally you'd ship it back get full refund and buy something that works...it's not that urgent or worth the risk to have your setup ready when you arrive versus what could go be wrong if you dont have the ability to test it IMO.

I got burnt on ebay for $2.000 when I bought used motif es 7 and it arrived damaged...

in addition chances are gear you're looking to purchase will be cheaper few months down the road

Get yourself a 4000 and grow with it.
