Sampling Audio on PC

I was told by my friends brother that he samples movies and audio on his PC. He said he is able to play a movie and record the sounds into Audacity.

I remember the old days on XP this was possible, you could select 'whatever's playing' and record audio from youtube or other streaming sources.

But I haven't figured out how to do this nowadays on my WIN 7 PC.

My current setup is Adobe Audition 3.0 and a Presonus Firestudio Mobile. I'd like to be able to record off of spotify, youtube, and netflix into Audition.

If anyone can help me troubleshoot that'd be great!

(maybe there is software out there, I know there is audio hijack for MAC)

I think I've discovered that Audacity is the best way to do this.

i believe you do this by setting "Stereo Mix" as your default recording device. This will pickup any and all audio that you have playing via web browser, itunes, or video player software.

just make sure that in whatever recording software you're using, that you go into the programs' options and make sure it's set to record using "Stereo Mix".

Why yes it does.

While in the edit waveform view...

First go to: Options > Device Order. Then click the tab labeled "Recording Devices".

Then under "Multitrack Device Preference Order" click "Monitor" and click the "Move Up" button until it is 1st in that device list.

Lastly, while "Monitor" is still highlighted click the "Use in EV" button. Done.

timed record mode
metering
MIDI Triggering enable
syncronize cursor across windows
windows recording mixer
cd player
pre / post roll

I would think the way to do it would be in audio hardware setup, because thats where I select my inputs for recording in edit mode.

it's frustrating that newer software and computers make something that was easy as hell before, a complicated procedure that involves other software.

I think another option is to record my headphone out on my interface back into the interface, and bring the according playback level down.

Use the software's search function or check the help to find "Device Properties".

I've already thouroughly looked into all options and settings in 3.0.

I think it's gonna be a software thing, audacity or using another program.

Since it depends on many factors you will only get help if you list all information.

OS, soundcard/interface, software that plays the video and the audio setting there, audio setting of the recording software.
Its a routing thing. you'll need to route the output of the playing software to the input of the recording software. sometimes its easy (windows recording mixer set to: WHAT YOU HEAR) and sometimes more complicated (using an external audiointerface that use ASIO and your software has to be set up correctly).
Another way would be: loading the movie into audition and cut out the audio from the complete film audio

my audio hardware setup in audtion shows 3 DAW outputs, not sure if that is part of the solution or not. there's only one output on the back of the firestudio.

audio hardware setup in audition only lists the inputs on my interface as possible sources for recording.

you would think if it's possible, the option to record 'what you hear' would be found in audition. or at least be able to select DAW as a source.

I have a feeling i'm going to either have to use the headphone workaround or find out about some software that can help
