Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Dont recall seeing this in the manual to the XL, but I've been absorbing so much information out of it that I may have just overwhelmed myself for the night, but here's my question:

Is there any way to trigger your sample where pressing the same pad again will stop its previous trigger instead of both presses playing together?

I tried turning on loop, but its hard to get the sample triggering to sound smooth being that the moment I take my finger off the pad to press it again, it is going to abruptly stop. Would appreciate any tips or advice on this matter...

shift+6 should bring you to the program menu... then go to params, and in the bottom right you will see a thing you can change from poly to mono or note off. try mono.

if you split yer sample into pieces, then sequence those pieces, then use track mute to achieve this, yes.

if you just use it as a single sample, no.

welcome to the machine, now step yer game up and learn to hack

Thanks! I couldnt believe the XL would leave out such a feature given its reputation.

tapedeck, surely you didnt think I was asking that question to work with one long a$$ sample did you? lol I may be green on the MPC, but Im not that green! I like to layer some samples so sometimes I trigger others differently so I dont have unwanted carry over. I could trim off the unwanted portion, but sometimes in another part of the sequence or a new sequence I may want all of the sample. Besides that it saves time instead of making a duplicate sample. With that being said, I definitely got the MPC and came to this forum to step my game up. Big shoutout to everyone here for sharing their knowledge! Much appreciated!

So if I understand you correctly you want to trigger a sample like in "oneshot-mode" (hit the pad and it plays till the end) but also want to be able to stop that "oneshot" sample?
The MPC doesn't have that kind of "start/stop" function on pads but you can use a workaround by set up a second pad with an empty sample and use it to stop the first pad.
Example

Pad A1 = lets say a drumbreak sample (set to Overlap:MONO)
Pad A5 = Sample 000 (sample 1 second silence and put it on this pad)

Go to Program PARAMS menu and hit Pad5. set cursor on the Overlap function and hit OPEN WINDOW button.
Set curson on one of the "Note:--/OFF-OFF" lines and choose Pad A1.

If you hit Pad A1 it will play the drumbreak as one shot but you are able to stop it immediately with Pad A5.

mr_debauch pointed me in the right direction on this, but your post gave me insight into a way I may be able to further manipulate sample triggering. Thanx! Every little bit helps in one way or another

Just use Note Off and save alot of time. The other way is to do what peterpiper said but the muting pad can have no sound assigned to it, no need for any 1 second silence, the MIDI info will still mute it.

R you sure? As far as I remember (havn't used this method for a long time) it didn't work without a sample on a pad. I'll test it tomorrow.

it was hit or miss... sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't... on the 2000xl... I never tried without it on the classic..

however I don't sample any silence, I take a high hat or some other existing sample in ram and pop it onto a pad like D16, then I pitch up all the way and put the filter on 0... and if that doesn't get rid of it then I do 16 levels velocity and use pad 1.

I tried it last night and it did not work!!! I stand corrected, peterpiper!!! I swear I used to do it without the silent sample in the past, but I guess not. To make the silent sample I went in sample screen and set the time to 0.1sec hit record then low passed the pad all the way.

I think if you do it with a sample (make the sequence), and then in params you take the sample off the pad... then the midi data is there but I'm not sure if it works properly.. I think it is off and on. I remember trying to figure it out like 5 or 6 years ago.
