Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By jean Fri Dec 05, 2003 3:49 pm
Hi I have the Mutec 8 outs on my MPC. I cannot use the digital in or out with a regular cd or minidisc player. I was said it could be an AES/EBU(MUTEC) and S/PDIF(AKAI) issue. Now I understand Mutec manufactures a conversion box between the 2 systems but someone told me that the loss during the conversion is such that I might as well stick to analog and save money. Does anyone know the truth? Thank you to any1 who can help. Jean

Thank you Tutor. I wish I have the Akai and not the "more professional" MUTEC, I don't know anything about the technical aspect but those who know cannot believe it is a jack comming in and out ( should be an XLR it seems). What is the advantage of the Mutec over the Akai?

I don't know much about and have yet to see the mutec expansion( I wish someone will give me a link to see what it looks like). But aes only has about two advantages over spdif, longer cable runs (10fold), and lower clock jitter(resulting in cleaner sound) and oh yeah no copy protection (at least version 3).

The Mutec is a lot cheaper than the Akai version, which is why a lot of music shops install that version (but charge you the Akai version price) - that's what happened to me - but when I first bought my XL, I was a bit green about these matters so I didn't do anything about it.

I was told that it didn't matter and you could just hook up any jack cable to the MPC and it would sample in digital mode - it doesn't - 'no digital signal present'. I've tried a variety of cables, but it seems that you do need to convert these signals with a box like the CO3.

One day, I'll either get a CO3 or get myself a SPDIF output board, but as I sample everything through analogue compressors and EQs, I don't ever need the digital ins.

not sure if this will help i had the same trouble trying to sample from my pc's spdif output into the mpc. i think it was in the manual that it only supports spdif at a rate of 44.1khz, not 48 which i was trying to use.

Well, I don' t know what I did but it seems to be working now! I use a digital cable with an adaptor jack/Rca . I also had to adjust to+ 12dB in the mixer screen. I tried both in (from a cd player) an out (to a vp 9000). Don't ask me why...

It's the same signal on the Mutek as the Akai model, just a different connector. I think this was primarily to avoid patent issues with Akai.

hi:
i read you have a 8OUTs (mutec)
i bougth one and i have seriuos problems connecting it.

you know something about that?

thank you very much.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but I've got a question about the mutec digital output/input.

I've got an mpc2kxl with the mutec output card and a s2000 with a mutec card. WHat cable do I need to hook these together? I want to use it for resampling back and forth.

Thanks

Simon, thanks for stating the obvious. I'm not excepting a blue tooth connection or anything.

What kind of cable do I need. I can't find a AES (that's what i found it's called) cable anywhere.

Thanks

 A short balanced 1/4" (TRS-TRS) audio cable should do.

AES/EBU digital signals are supposed to be sent over special 110 ohm cable.

On longer runs you really need the 110 ohm cable to prevent signal reflections and the signal degrading to the point it does not work, but I don't think it will matter on a short interconnect between two close devices.

The maximum length under the AES3 spec is 100 metres, I think it takes in the ranges of tens of metres before you will have an unusable signal on normal balanced analogue audio cable.

You might even get away with a short unbalanced 1/4" (TS-TS) audio cable.

You might need to buy the cable and connectors, and make it yourself, or have it made for you. The AES3 spec calls for XLR connectors on the 110 ohm cable, so there might not be many TRS-TRS 110 ohm AES3 cables available off the shelf to suit the non-standard TRS connectors used with the Mutec AES/EBU digital IO.

The correct cable will be marked as either 110 ohm, or AES/EBU, or something similar.
