Took me one week playing around everyday.
What really helps is when you have another synth near by that is similar.
I got a roland sh-201 and then it was ABC easy lemon squeezy.
I also watched synth videos on youtube.

It made me realize how much I was under-using my v-synth.

Thanks again for your videos. Ian you should read the gearslutz thread. It talks about some modulation matrix settings. You could have part 3 to your videos explaining what tilt velo, ext, tf, zone, etc.. do, and more importantly how they interact.

Its just noodling around, playing with the modulation matrix makes the file kinda loud in the beginning. Be careful The filter resonates! but there audible stepping.

The only reason why I don't use the MPC4000 synth is because I already have other synths with all the knobs necessary. The 4000 is a great all in one unit.

When I made those Mod Matrix videos I was actually in the process of taking lessons with two synth programmers. One of them is the local know-all and certified techie for Moog, Roland etc. When I took the MPC4000 to him (it was his first time with it) he was impressed. (he was the guy in the first mod matrix video) I just didn't know how to access everything at the time or all of the jargon.

Speaking with him and listening to the evolution of sound from his perspective made me realize that the times we live in are great for music. Now that computers are so powerful and can record at such high resolution you don't need to create the electric piano or the sax because the samples are so accurate. Synths will always be great for creating unique sounds, of course.

I think the 4000 just suffers from the time it was created in. It is a gift and a curse. As the guys from the 60's and 70's are at retirement age, many of the younger engineers are replacing them and it started to happen rapidly between 2000 and now 2014. So older guys had that last go at akai with the 4000 and many of them they knew the value of accurate sampling and great functions over just nostalgia. Its very circular the patterns in life.

Only one or two engineers will ever become say a Roger Linn. Most will die with their great knowledge never being actualized because of a lack of funding or corporate politics, or a fickle public.

Talk to an old synth programmer you will hear great stories and learn cool things. That guy saved me from a few bad purchases.

I think the reason why some of the mod matrix doesnt respond is because some other settings defeat the mod matrix, like the global master level. Im going to set it at -12 or so. Ill be back on it when my right ear feels better. Probably scratching my head again. Rome wasnt built in a day.

Yeah its nice to talk to other like minded people about music and its technology. I always enjoy talking to Bruce Forat. I get lost at Forat.lol I was there the other day, meaning to only stay for about 15 min, it became an hour and half. I rummage thru all that vintage equipment he has. Than we just start talking about gear, hes a equipment fiend. Dont let me go into the studio part, I just stare at those custom paint jobs. I was eyeballing his cs80 and tiesco synth and that blood clot ems

I hadn't been to that site in a long time. I just reread the thread and I have a better understanding of what they are saying because I understand the 4000 more now.
