causes of constant kernel crashes on mac?

I had this same exact issue with my MBP. Turned out to be defective RAM! Got the RAM warranteed and haven't had the problem in over a year and a half!

Sweet! How do I check the quality of the RAM and if it is defective or not?

Try running the apple hardware test

I seem to recall there are two options, quick and full. Probably need the full one, although bad ram isn't always picked up. The full scan can take a while, so I suggest you run it overnight.

Yeah, none of the hardware tests detected my ram problem. It even passed MemTest. Only way I verified it was by putting my stock ram back in to see if the problem went away, and it did. So Corsair replaced my ram hassle free and it's been fine ever since.

Thanks y'all. Its not a RAM problem.It is definately related to max/msp and running my monome 256 at same time. External sync with ableton is buggy as well, so i have to 'unsync' the two when running ableton as a slave, if i want to input midi data to it.
(that is when ren is master running in standalone).

It is a workaround. Still get kernel crash if I try to enter data into ableton while the ren is synced as master? if I unclick 'ext' on ableton during workflow, there have been no crashes so far.

Ok, pretty wanked off now. Have got new RAM and am at 12GB which should be more than enough. I have kept the set up minimal, Ren straight into Mac, and only module that is plugged into Ren via midi in and out cables is my novation basstation. Ren says 'compeer stopped communicating'…….had enough of this crashing shit and having a moment whereby i feel like a child and will go back to using 2000xl.

Sent one CC message via moving the mod wheel on the Novation and BAM! Computer stopped communicating. Anyway, just wanted to whine. RAM has sped my mac up no end but not solved this crashing issue. no kernel panics which is good

last time i had these kind of errors it was a dying hard drive.

i would back up asap and maybe, if you can (i know...macs) try replacing the hard drive.

yer probably going to have to pony up for the store to do it, as depending on the model, it can be a pain.

if it were me - have the store replace the hard drive, keep the hard drive, and stick it in an external case for further testing.

Mmm, not an expert but doubt it as the mpc software is the ONLY programme that crashes. My mac has barely been used. Points taken on board though.

yea i mean that is suspicious, for sure.
however, if its a bad sector of the drive that only the mpc accesses....i dont know enough about kernel crashes to really tell you one way or another, just telling you my experience. all bets are off when it comes to memory / disk issues.

Yeah man, sorry that was your experience, sucks for sure. Maybe I could try a fresh install as that is one avenue I haven't explored yet? Also don't know enough about kernel crashes or the workings of a mac to fully explore. Was kinda hoping the ram installation would improve the situation

think you may have to do a checklist on what everybody's replied
u changed the ram so prob not the cause
try the extended apple hardware test this helped me before didn't take that long i think it depends on how much ram you got
try resetting your nvram/pram
also create another user and see if it crashes in that account
could be a corrupt ktext i messed about with a hackintosh these cause kernel panics one that it could be is the I/0 usb as the mpc is usb or maybe a plist file i had cubase with a 01x mixer use to crash all the time i deleted the plist files and it solved the problem
a fresh install u could do with the mpc update with maverick support then u could of done a fresh install regardless
