Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

I'm looking to do get my hats and or snares to roll this way.

Trap beats... Not a big fan of since of a lot of them are redundant but also feel I can make use of them if I was able to incorporate the rolling snares and rolling hats a different way.

Has anyone been able to accomplish this on the mpc WITHOUT using software? If so can you point me the right direction, (using the quantize of course). I'm sure someone with crazy timing can do without using the quantize feature but I'd prefer to use it.

its definitely done with quantise on.

hold the note repeat button and the snare pad. now change the timing correct value in real time.

you can also add in a slider or pressure for tuning

you can get more crazy with it if you double your tempo

JESUS that video is 12 minutes?! it takes all of 15 seconds to set up.
mpcs are perfect for this.

Good to know this can be done. I was searching on the net and seen some guys arguing about this. Saying it couldn't be done.

I understood the note repeat button makes it repeat but was missing the "change timing correct value in real time". Does that mean the snare track down in a pattern then change it after, (which I havent figured out yet)? I'm those are 1/32.

I also had been wondering if its possible to nudge the track? Kind like if I think the drums are too stiff and want to give it more swing, (not on entire sequence) but just on kick, track or snare.

Good looking out!

no and you are answering your own question - in real time means just that, not recording then editing later...tho of course you are free to do that to tighten it up.

keep your different instruments on different tracks and your world will open up - you can now time correct, mute, etc, independently.
also, a lot of those functions have a 'range' parameter where you can choose which notes the operation affects. this is very foreign coming from a graphical environment like a computer, but really powerful and part of why mpcs are the best hardware sequencers ever made.

take note - i am talking about most this from a 2kxl persepctive - i am just assuming these basics of mpc functionality are there across the line.

Aight cool. I'll be sure to reference this once I have it in hand. I had a mpc 2000xl back in the day but even then used the sequencer on the Triton because I couldnt figure out how to nudge or lay the drums back a bit on a particular track.

These types of small things make are a big deal.

Those rolling hi hats and snares are another story though..

Trap rolls can be done on 2kxl.

DAMN..I was scheming on getting another before picking this 1 up for the size and ability to carry with everywhere. Pros and cons to everything I guess. Good to know tho. Especially since I've seen them on craigs for as low as $250 now. I spent $2600 on 1 fully loaded (8 outs, memory maxed out and etc)..

Not gonna give on this 500 though.

You can do the same thing on the MPC500.

Press the Timing Correct button to go into Timing Correct mode.

Hold down the Note Repeat button while pressing a pad, change the TC value while the note is repeating.

Use Shift-Note Repeat if you want to lock note repeat on while doing it.

I like where this is going. The shift and note feature trick is coming in handy. I think once I get the timing right I can get this. Def. put me closer to what I'm trying to do.

Thanks!
