making songs?

just another noob question of mine (im using the free jj os btw).

i've looked through so many tutorials and stuff but none of them have actually got around on how to compose an actual song on the mpc 2500 with parts for verses and a hook and being able to add in different effects and sample changes at different times in the song. all i really know how to do and have learned is to chop samples and record them together with a drum pattern in different tracks.

i know i've been asking for a lot of help but this is what forums are for right? no?

Build different parts (verses, chorus) in different sequences. Then string them together in song mode.

so do i have to re record my sample recordings and drum patterns in a different sequence if i just want to make minor tweaks? there should be something easier than that.

What kind of minor tweaks do you mean?

If you're talking about automation tweaks you can copy paste what you have a couple of times making it one long sequence and record automation tweaks.

If you want to add extra samples on top of what you have you can add an extra layer in a new track.

If you want to create a complete new section then you should do it how I described in the previous post. But if you want to i.e. keep the same drum pattern in the chorus you can copy that to a new sequence and record a new melody/ loop with your samples on top of that.

Typically, I save the "minor tweaks" for when I've already tracked out to a DAW/tape/etc.

In the MPC itself - I make a 'chorus' and a 'verse' and then make 2-3 copies of them instantly. From there, I f*ck with the copies a little bit. Maybe adding or removing some drum hits, maybe taking out the main melody and putting a pad in it's place. May chop the sample different/throw filters on it/etc on the verse parts.

Serious - copy your patterns and give them some nice fisting here and there. You'd be surprised to find it's just not just the a** hole that opens up.

Use the Q-sliders on your copies, too! You can generate a lot of movement by
putting "level" on the Q and going to town. Filter cutoff on Q = movement also.

That's what they are there for! Record your sliders onto the copies, see what happens. String them together in song mode! Then, once you like the flow, convert that whole jam into one long sequence. Now you're able to play with pad-mutes and different things that are normally not available to you in the song mode screen.

Once you record your meat & potatoes, then it's time for the fun stuff. Overdubbing with real instruments (I tend to overdub my drum sets & bongos, random chatty dialogue from field recordings, etc) or more samples/synths/plug-ins/etc.

It's really a crazy process but you'll get there. Just try to NOT do crazy - completed sh*t in the MPC by itself if you aren't too fluid with the machine yet, especially if you have access to other tools that cover what you're trying to do in the MPC. It may just save frustration.

Hahaha!

I just know that when people try to do too much in one box, sh*t ends up really convoluted and the focus is no longer on their music but on HOW to program/tweak their machine/MPC. Once the focus is taken away from the music, it could be a slippery slope to climb back up in the same session.

I break my focus on my machine(s) up. Some times I turn them on to just MESS with things, play around. Others - I turn it on to make music.

Just in case that my sentiment about not trying to complete too much too quick on one machine without already knowing what you're doing. It's easy to get lost/frustrated, and that is NOT what creation is about (often times ).

yeah, im actually trying to make full beats in my mpc. but like how would i go about copying and what not?

and maybe you explain exporting the song file to me?

Dude, now you're getting lazy. I saw some other 'lazy' questions of yours that could easily by answered to yourself by checking the manual or using the search button on this forum. The free JJOS is very similar to the Akai OS, so the manual should cover all the topics and functions you're asking us. Seriously, it will save you a lot of death treats on these forums.

you're totally right, i took your advice and read the manual but now im trying to move an event in grid editing and i cant because using jjos and there is no edit function, so how would i go about that now?

another thing, when i try to record and over dub something new into a copied track in a different sequence it records and plays back the event until i like switch modes or even stop then it reverts back to the original. long story short, it doesn't save.
