Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By mastasteez Mon Jan 06, 2014 3:23 pm
I've just been outbid on a mint 2000 classic (comes with 8 outs and FX expansion and all in working order).

It sold for £207 and my highest bid was £202. I feel pretty sick now that I missed out on it but couldn't pay more as my mrs woulda flipped.

Just wondering what a good price for a unit in that sort of condition and extras would be worth. I've got a sneaking suspicion I missed out on a bargain even if I bid upto £250.

I don't even need a 2000 but I've always wanted one as I love the design and have heard good things about the sound.

What would Jesus do?

Just do what you did, put up the highest you can afford (in the last 10 seconds of the auction), and walk away if it goes higher.

There will be others, no point stressing on the missed one, especially as you don't really need it.

Yeah thanks Simon.

What about the price though? I didn't wish to bid more because I was unsure of the 'going rate'. Wifey couldn't be mad if I copped a bargain.

at this point it's water under the bridge... as far as price expansions and LCD screen are probably worth what the unit entire unit sold for

I agree on the LCD especially. That's the killer there.

Plus the "Sound" does not really exist. You get out of it what you put in it.

It's the 3000/60 that has a "Sound" of the MPC's

Sick looking machine, like if you want one just to have it around then hell go for it. Typically they go 300-450USD that I've seen but that's for the XL. Maybe 2000 would be lower. Also think the 2000 would have a worse LCD problem with the screen inside the system (strictly speculation here of my own -- not a proven or guaranteed thing)

If I find anything though I'll pm you a link k?

That jog wheel on the 2000 is the sh!t. You can trunc a sample so fast and easy. Hated when they changed to the XL and left off its best feature.

Cheers big homie. Would appreciate that.

Would it not be fair to say that the sound of the 2000 would be different to that of the 500 or 1000 (the only MPCs I've heard/messed with)?

Nah. Be the same. Well. I don't know, if you have like some crazy hearing you could technically notice a difference, just in the age of the circuits/way things were built.

But as for any type of sounding thicker and that, or as they say warmer, nah.

I think it's the feel/look and size of the units that add to the placebo of sounding better.

And your welcome

I think the 2000 has a sound... it just is hard to explain it. The 60 has a very very noticeable sound difference (s900/950 too) when you hear the result of sampling into them.... you can almost predict ahead of time what the thing you wanna sample will sound like. On the 2000 it does it clearer for sure, but it affects some frequencies. **** dope machine though... can't complain about making beats on the 2000 at all... it's fun.

I have read users say they have compared the MPC2000 and MPC2000XL side by side, and prefer the sound of the MPC2000, and that the MPC1000/2500/5000 sound different again.

What is needed is a side by side comparison of the different MPCs, into good quality preamp and AD convertors, so people can hear any difference for themselves.

Doing this for the DA would be no problem, as you could load up the same samples into each, and you would be hearing the exact same samples out of each MPC.

Where I think it might get more difficult is when you want to include the input and AD circuitry of each MPC in the comparison process, might be more difficult to setup a reasonable comparison that included sampling into each MPC from an external source, so that you hear both the input/AD and DA/output in the comparison, and to take into account the available higher sample rate and bit depth on some of the MPCs.

Another consideration might be the overdriving of the input stages that a lot of users do when sampling, that is part of the sound, do you compare them all being recorded peaking under full level on the meters, or do you have to also include various amounts of overdriving the input on each MPC?

Something similar to this side by side comparison, but recording into good quality convertors, instead of a video camera built-in mic, with all the hardware MPCs in question, and using the same sequence on each MPC, rather than playing them each manually/differently...

I would pay no more than $350-375USD for a 2k classic. XL's should never be more than $400-$450 and on those you have a chance the LCD had less use. In all cases I'm talking minty or extremely well cared for machines. In both cases there's a lot of them out there, even factoring the lined ones.
