Any option of having a mess with a Maschine at one of your mates'? I think after a couple hours you'd know if it was for you.

I switched from MPC500 to Maschine a year and a half ago and the pros outweigh the cons massively.

This seems like a good time to try something new. So why not? At the very least, you will have satisfied your curiosity on the newer stuff that you feel you might be missing out on. You can always go back to the MPC if all else fails.

Live and Maschine are both great alternatives to the MPC. You can demo Live for 30 days. I don't think there is a demo for Maschine but you can download the manual and there is a ton of videos for it.

I get a JJOS MPC 1000 and then hook it up to Ableton for sounds, I use the MPC as a midi controller for pads. Then I sample the stuff into the MPC to chop up if I get bored with looking at the screen.

I found it better than Maschine personally, Maschine is nice but I prefer chopping on a jjosxl machine coming from someone who goes through mpcs, sp, and an octatrack.

Yeah Maschine's chopping has everything you need and a nice big view, but it's just slower than other alternatives, namely JJ chopping or my main method Recycle.

I tend to just let stuff pile up and then chop literally 100-150 loops at once in Recycle. I realize 90% of folks chop as they are getting set to use the chops in a song though. Hence JJ chop being the most popular choice for many.

I use Maschine+Ableton and still use MPC+Live at times. It's really nice to have both options, and Live+...anything is a good match. Reason Rewired to it has been great for years and even better with both apps at 64 bit and multicore supported. You can really load up an ungodly amount of samples, instruments and FX and still have CPU/RAM to spare.

For me Maschines greatest strength is I have so many already chopped samples that I never put in PGMs and so many 24 bit sample I never converted if I'm not using the 4k. Maschine earns it keep just by the speed with which you can Ctrl+A 16 samples drag and drop and press save and have a kit.

Ableton Drum Racks are no joke too. The per pad functionality and the fact you can drop VSTi+VST FX on each pad is cool, giving you another option as far the similar functionality in Maschine.

cool didn't know you were a maschine fan, personally if I could get the studio then that may steer me away from a mpc due to the jog wheel.

For a while I had the MPC 1K and Maschine Mikro MK1 working together. It was an interesting set up. Sending PC-messages to keep the patterns sync'd up, tons of fun.

A friend of a friend is offering to sell me his Maschine MK1 in mint condition for 260$. Good deal?

For what it's worth, I copped a MPC4k with all available expansions for $700 the other day...twice (once for me, once for a friend).

If you're into more than just phrase sampling, like really getting in there and messing with stuff, sound design, keygroups, etc etc, in my opinion, accept no substitute for the 4k. The sequencer is comparable to anything out there today for anything realistic you'll use, and the sampling engine is truly just insane.

And if that's something you'd like but not central to what you do, check out the Z8. I got mine for like 300 bucks off craigslist. The front panel is my controller for almost everything, it's incredibly versatile when paired with other gear.

If that's the direction you're looking to head, I can't imagine anything but the 4k. If you're looking to go in a different direction...I dunno.

If you want hardware I would suggest mpc4000, mv8800/8000, mpc2500 and download JJOS

for software I'd would only suggest maschine, or maybeeeee ableton with a controller, honestly not too much software out there that can replace an good mpc IMO, I went from hw to sw, now Im trying to go back to HW bc software is mostly gimmicks at this point in time.

giest is cool, except it cant do "note on" mutes with the controller.

so you cant have your sample playing out by tapping a pad, then tap another pad to mute that one, you have to hold the pad down.
which is really the only reason why i didnt absolutely love it.

i even emailed them about it and they said they dont really plan on putting that feature in becuase thats not how they envisioned it being used, which sucks.
i would probably be using geist right now if it had that feature.
everything else on it was dope imo.
