for those of you that have, for example, keyboards or even other samplers on another table adjacent to your main setup where your speakers are setting, do you find it difficult to play with only one ear facing the direction of the speakers?

my keyboard and mpc are on separate tables in my room (basically forming a right angle). so whenever i want to play my mpc, only my left is facing the speaker and it's difficult to get a good sounding mix sitting like that playing live, as im constantly having to turn in my chair to face my speakers and hear the sound in front of me, not to mention while im playing, the sound is hitting only my left ear.

how does my speaker placement look? I'm always trying to find the sweet spot, I have a low ceiling also, and I put foam on the side walls to reduce reflections, also as you can see my setup is nestled in a little concave on the long end of the room, but I keep my speakers at leafs 1ft from the back wall. That back walk where those white doors are they are very thin and behind it is a boiler so winter time that thing makes noise smh. I could move my setup but it would be too far from my booth or I would need a longgg wire.

Is it better to have a large open space diagonally behind my speakers or is it better to have a few feet between the speakers and a wall?

What kind of acoustic treatment, room, space is best to have behind your speakers where you are mixing? What if the wall behind your speakers isn't even? like a stair case?

The current picture of my home studio

This is an overview:
Image

Using as main workstation a 2kxl for sequencing, sampling, arranging everything. The 8 outs of mpc they record on a tascam 238s cassete multitrack:

Then the 8 outs of the 238s, they record on the 8 ins of a presonus firepod (using the presonus studio one DAW). Then the 8 outs of the firepod they are connected to the tascam m-216 where the mixing takes place.

Image

The final mix is recorded on a tascam da30 or either in the pc.

Additional hardware:

akai ex70c (comp)
akai ex80e (enchancer)
akai ex90r (reverb)
Near ESi 5 (monitors)
2 x mk2
Traktor audio 6
Vestax PMC-06 Pro (mixer)

Thats all, any suggestions on what to upgrade or remove. I am willing to have an analog and digital choice on producing music.

Things that i m looking to change: Sell the dat recorder, purchase a reel to reel. Buy a compressor and delay (i love the reverb of the ex90r, perfect for my taste).

Thanks for reading!!

Space is still an issue, so I wanted a smaller setup, more clean, less messy. Sold my old desk and got myself a new one. So I went from this:

Really like it that I have a computer based/ post production setup and a hardware setup.

i would be rocking the mpc into the Tascam mixer, the outputs of the tascam mixer to the firepod > firepod to the 8 track cassette (or PC) and get rid of the ADAT.......

MPC>Tascam mixer>firepod>cassette / ADAT

This way you can play with your effects on the mixer and still EQ the mpc channels before committing to tape / PC. You can also stick your monitors on the firepod, monitor both the PC and your hardware..........

thats just me though!

Not sure if it is possible though, i can insert the 8 outs of mpc into tascam but how can out them separately again?!

If your mixer has inserts use those, but only with a TS (1 stripe) cable. If you use TRS (2 stripes) it might not work right because inserts are send/return in one jack.

if you have TRS just insert it to the first click, otherwise TS are the go.

If you don't want to interrupt the signal flow into the mixer channel, then first click into the insert for either TRS or TS.

Or, use an adapter or special cable, to be able to plug it in all the way and not interrupt the signal flow into the channel...

Gives a direct out from the mixer mic-pre, most likely pre-EQ and everything else, depending on the signal flow within the mixer.

And you lose the use of channel inserts, as inserts.
