Can't Find File??

Good day people! I recently purchased an MPC-2000xl. I was given a zip disk with sounds and programs. However, when I go to load the sounds I get a message saying that it can't find the file. What does this mean and how can it be resolved? I've searched the forum to see if anyone else has had this problem, but had no luck. So please spare the new guy here if this question has already been answered. Lol! Thanks.

Is it seeing the Zip disk, and giving you a lit of files to choose from to load?

And what are you trying to load, a sample, or a program?

Is it giving you a can't find file error when you try to load an individual sample, or when you try to load a program and it is loading the samples assigned to that program?

I am loading a program. The "can't find file" message shows when I try to load the program with the samples assigned to it.

Maybe the file just isn't there?

Or maybe it was transferred to/from a computer at some stage, and a long filename was truncated to an 8.3 format filename, so it is no longer the same filename as what the program was originally created with?

You could load the samples individually and create a new program.

Yes the files were transferred from a computer. What would be the steps to creating a new program? Is there a certain app that I need?

You can load the samples in the MPC itself, and when you load each sample, you choose a pad to assign it to. Then after loading and assigning the samples, you save the program that is created in that process back onto the same disk where the samples were loaded from.

You just need to ensure that all your samples are saved/named in an 8.3 filename format, if you intend to transfer them to/from the computer, otherwise it might truncate the filenames, and they will not match the filenames stored within the program, and you will have the same problems you are having now.

Got it. Thanks so much for your help. I have one last question. Once I load the samples individually, The sequences are now out of whack. Is there any way of taking the original program and formatting it to a 8.3 filename format, thus allowing the original pad assignments to be restored?

Not really sure how to read the sample assignments out of the program file, I have never tried it.

Do you still have the program and samples on the computer, from before you tried to copy them onto the Zip disk to transfer to the MPC, and before the sample filenames were truncated?

'Maybe' the original program file and samples could be loaded into one of the computer applications used to create programs, then you could see which samples should go onto which pads, rename them to 8.3, and recreate the program.

Yes, I do have the files before they were put unto a zip disk. The process of that went sorta like this. "Hey here's a disk with samples and sequences, load everything on this disk onto your computer, and then load them onto a zip disk." Thats what I did. Make sense?

If you check the filenames on the computer version, see if they are different to the filenames on the Zip that the MPC is seeing.

You would have to change the filenames on the Zip, in the MPC, to match the filenames on the computer.

Or, change the program in a computer MPC program editor, from the names as they are on the computer, to the truncated names on the Zip that the MPC is seeing.

Yes, the names on the MPC and the names on the computer differs.

You could try renaming the sample filenames on the Zip, from within the MPC, so that they match the filenames as they are shown on the computer, and then load the program, which should see the correct filenames, and load them correctly.

What computer OS are you using, Windows or Mac?

There 'might' be an option within one of the computer MPC program editors, to load the existing program and samples with the long filenames as the are on the computer, and then save them out with truncated 8.3 filenames that will work in the MPC, but I am not sure.

Im using a Mac. I downloaded the app that you suggested earlier. I searched for the option to load the existing program and samples, but it will only allow me to load samples.
