Can trigger Logic software instruments w/ MPC, can't record

I currently have my system set up to use Logic Pro X as a sound module, triggered by my MPC 2000 XL/Fast Track Pro. I set this up via MIDI environments, using the instructions found here. I think I have the basic connections right because I can trigger software instruments with the MPC. I can hear the software instrument playing as I hit pads & can also see audio signal levels coming through on that track... However nothing is getting recorded when I hit record... As for my other settings, I have enabled the track to record. I have also successfully synchronized my MPC w/ Logic via the Logic's MIDI Synch Project Settings and MPC's MIDI Clock setting. I've also set the bottom-left of my MPC's main screen to show "S:DRUM1:1A-Device01," selected "1A" & hit "open window," and set "Soft thru" to OFF.

The problem is when I hit record, nothing at all is recorded in the software instrument track. Not even an empty track of some sort. The metronome starts playing when I hit record & the box up top with "bar, beat, div," etc. turns red as if it's recording, but when you look at the track there's nothing happening there. I have enabled the track to record. And I am seeing the audio signal levels coming through as I play the software instrument via MPC... So I'm at a loss as to why nothing's recording. Any ideas?

[EDIT: For whatever it's worth I'm still able to record the sounds I have loaded to my MPC pads when I select one of the audio tracks that I was recording from the MPC earlier...]

Not sure, have not used Logic X, only 9.

It 'should' be recording the incoming MIDI notes on the software instrument track.

Maybe try getting the software instrument track to record any MIDI, without sync to the MPC.

What happens if you turn off MIDI sync/MMC between Logic and the MPC altogether, hit record on Logic, and hit the pads or press play on the MPC sequence to trigger the software instrument sounds, do you see any MIDI being recorded onto the track then?

You could also test recording MIDI notes onto the software instrument track by using the Logic Musical Typing window, to see if you can get Logic to record MIDI notes onto the software instrument track without the MPC in the chain at all, from your computer keyboard. That is accessed from the Logic Window-Musical Typing menu choice.

Still no t able to get it working, thanks for the help anyway though Simon. I can record MIDI data if I use the Musical Typing window. Still for some reason nothing's recording when I try to record via MPC, even though there's both signal levels & sound before I hit record. I tried turning off synch and still got nothing...

I tried messing with auto-punch thinking maybe there was some random recording setting I that was messing me up... got nowhere...

This is a bummer man. Anyone else have any ideas?

You could try resetting the Logic preferences, but you will lose any preference changes that you have made since installation.

You could try creating a new administrative user account, and try running it from there, to see if it behaves any differently.

You could ensure that the MIDI channel coming from the MPC matches the MIDI channel on the track.

You could turn off the multichannel MIDI allocation setting, and see if it makes any difference.

Hey thank you guys for the replies, I appreciate it, I was actually able to get things working with a very easy fix... Turns out I went wrong by messing with the MIDI environment in the first place, that's unnecessary, you just gotta set things up to control multiple instruments on different MIDI Channels via the project settings (instructions here).

Yes, messing with the environment can cause hassles, as you say, should have just used the 'Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording' setting.

My next dilemma is similar. I can hear the software instruments when i hit an mpc pad ,i can even record. The thing is i am only able to record 1 instrument. For example i want to use a synth from logic9 on 1 logic channel and a drum kit on another channel, a bass synth on another, so on and so forth. However i just cant get this working right...I still can only record 1 instrument into logic using the MPC as a midi controller, maybe i am going about this wrong but im baffled. Any help again would be greatly needed and much appreciated

From the Logic File menu, choose Project Settings/Recording. In the Logic Project Settings/Recording window, turn on "Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording".

On the left side of the Logic Arrange Page, in the Inspector section, click the drop down arrow next to the Instrument/Track name, change the MIDI Channel for each Logic Instrument/Track from ALL to the MIDI channel with which you want to play each track from the MPC.

Record enable each/all Logic Instrument tracks that you want to play from the MPC.

Then each Logic Instrument track should respond on the different MIDI channels being sent from the various MPC MIDI tracks/channels.

Not quite sure, i also have the 1000 along with the 2000XL and im hoping the 1000 will work.
