Share your knowledge on these two classic MPCs

I searched this problem for a little, but nothing close to my problem. Then again, I might not know what I'm looking for. here's my story, maybe someone can help.

I bought a backlight for my MKI on ebay from england, and installed that puppy in there. The screen seemed pretty good, but after a few days, it started to flicker while I was using the MPC. A few times, the light faded completely out and one time it scrambled the screen. I pressed main screen and it went away. I figured I'd need to look inside so I did, i moved some stuff around and put some zip ties, because it seemed that the power supply was a little wobbly where it connected to the backlight cable. So it seemed to be fine until tonight when it started to flicker again. Then the screen just went insane and started showing many blocks and lines. I opened it up, took out the backlight completely, unseated the cables, reseated them, and put the case back together, but still the same thing. I'd like to get this fixed, but I don't know what to do :( . Does anyone know what is wrong? Any info greatly appreciated

Are you sure all the internal cables are seated properly, maybe try re-seating them all?

Nothing accidentally damaged when replacing the backlight, all cables and connections to/from the LCD look OK?

yeah I was gonna say disconnect and reseat all connectors and cables....

that solved my crazy screen problem a couple years back and it hasn't returned yet.



if you flip it on and off a few times... does it ever boot correctly?


I hope you get that shit sorted out... nothing more depressing than an mpc 60 with dementia..

I'll open it up again and check again and re-reseat the connectors. No it does not boot up, it just gives weird lines and not even the light on my emulator shows up which tells me that it's something with that board that gives power to the backlight and floppy. You think I might be able to replace or fix this board? maybe clean it off or something? Maybe the backlight was pulling too much power and it caused a surge of some sort.

The backlight should be connected to the small Inverter PCB just behind the floppy drive, and the Inverter PCB is connected to the Power PCB.

Probably best to test the power coming off of the Power PCB, rather than replacing it, in case it is nothing to do with that PCB.

There are four fuses on the Power PCB to check, in case any of those have blown.

Were the connections from the Inverter PCB into the backlight properly insulated, no bare wires that could have shorted out onto the LCD circuits and damaged them, or caused one/some of the fuses to blow?

Have a word with misterwhite, he should be able to help - in fact it's probably him you bought the backlight from (saintbaz on ebay). Top bloke, he'll certainly be able to confirm if it's a backlight problem, but he also repairs MPC60s, so should be able to help all round.

The wires do have insulation around them. How would I check if it is the power PCB fuses? How do I test those out? It doesn't really turn on so it's got to be one of them right? MPCTutor - thanks, awesome I will see what he can help me with!

Ok so thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I found the service manual and I guess the only way to test if its the fuses is to replace them so I will order those and then go from there, thank you everyone very much. I hope one day I will have something to contribute

The way to test them is to use an ohm-meter/multimeter/probe/etc. and test for continuity.

And to use a volt-meter/multimeter to check the voltages coming off of the Power PCB/power supply/inverter.

Please be careful poking around the power supply area if turned on, you could easily electrocute yourself!

well if it's a good chance that it is the fuses I should just replace them and not go through all that business right?

There is a chance, not sure how good it is, as something else might be fried or have a bad connection.

If checking continuity of a fuse with a multimeter is 'all that business', I'm not sure you should really be poking around inside your MPC, you should probably take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

But it is cheap enough to buy 4 fuses, just make sure you get the correct fuses, and use the correct fuses in the correct locations.

UNPLUG THE MPC POWER FROM THE WALL BEFORE YOU TOUCH ANY OF THIS STUFF!

I talked to the guy who sold me the backlight and from the info i gathered here I replaced the F2 fuse and inspected the others. None of them looked like they were broken so when I powered it up with the new F2 fuse nothing happened. I'm looking for a multimeter now, but is there anything else that it might be?

Really hard to guess over the internet.

Maybe a connector not seated properly, or something slightly damaged when removing the LCD to change the backlight.

You might have to take it in to someone for repair.

I figured it out with the help of Mr. White - it was not the fuses but a dry solder joint on the power supply board. I resoldered it and it works great now - I guess I'll just leave the backlight out so it doesn't happen again.
