Recording Midi on Mpc 1000.

So I picked up a midi cable today. I plug it in and I can play my keyboard sounds from my mpc but I cant record it. I know nothing about this and the youtube videos arent helping.

Can someone tell me

A. Which midi ports I should be using?

B. How do I record a track with midi?
I know it must have to do with creating a program or something.. maybe.

D. Can I record midi in a sequence with only 1 midi cable?

A. A pretty typical MPC MIDI setup is like this:

MPC MIDI out >>> Keyboard MIDI IN (doesn't matter which out as long as it's an OUT, but remember which one you used. I'd start with A)

B. Choose a blank track on your current sequence.

Set Type to MIDI.
Set Program to none, or create one for use with the keyboard.
Set Midi to 1A (or whichever port you chose above.)

When you hit record on the MPC, it will save the MIDI data for that Sequence. When you hit play, it should then send that data to the keyboard.

If none of the above is working for you then you need to describe your setup in more detail.

Okay i have them both connected.

When I play my pads with no program set it plays the keyboard and I am able to record that. Iv seen videos of people playing the keyboard into the mpc but mine only plays off the pads.

Also will I be able to save tracks containing midi and play them without having the keyboard hooked up to it?

this stuff isnt complicated at all.

in your case you will need 2 midi cables

1. mpc out > keyboard in
2. keyboard out > mpc in

remember that midi is only data and not audio/sound. you need your keyboard MIDI OUT connected to the mpc IN(A/B) so it can read the notes and record the data you are playing, then when you press play on the mpc to get sound to playback from your keyboard, you need the mpc MIDI OUT going into your keyboard IN. this is because the data that you recorded on the mpc will now be relayed back to the keyboard and tell it what to play. to answer your last question, no. again whatever you record into the mpc form the keyboard will be data only.. there are work arounds, like sampling the keyboard into the mpc but i recommend learning this midi stuff first..

if you only have one cable, you could start off with keyboard out>mpc in then record your sequence. then switch the midi cable to mpc out>keyboard in to hear the playback..
