Installed HDM-10 but still says insufficient memory

i got an mpc1000 recently and am having some problems with insufficient memory. i installed a hard drive in it (with the HDM-10 kit). the MPC recognizes the hard drive but every time i try chop a sample up, it still says insufficient memory. its just a small 25 second sample. anyone have any ideas? I've read the manual and done some reading on this forum, but I couldn't find this answer. I don't know if there is something wrong with the mpc or if I'm just missing something super obvious.

The samples are stored in RAM while editing, not the HD ... the HD is only used to save them ... do you have additional RAM installed?

okay, this makes sense. i do have the 128mb card in there too. it will let me play the sample back but when i do autochop it wont let me continue. the sample is in stereo. could it be as simple as converting to mono? im willing to give anything a try, because this is getting pretty frustrating.

Autochop will create at least double the amount of sample data used by the original sample (i.e. original sample plus all the chops).

If you wish to retain stereo, initially use EXTRACT to create a smaller section of the sample, then delete the remainder, and then chop that smaller section. Then if need be, save it all and reopen the original file and pick another section to chop down.

If you have JJOS, use non destructive chopping to slice it.
Then you will save memory.

Isn't a 25 second sample only 5MB?

i'm not sure. i have the 128mb card in, turn the MPC on, and it says "16mb recognized" or whatever. but then if i go to the "save" page, it says i have the 128mb available. maybe that is also part of the problem.

i re-uploaded my sample in mono and that seems to be working for the time-being though, so thank you for all of your help everyone!

128MB card? I think you're still confused over this. I suspect you are referring to the 128MB CF card that came with the MPC, the one that stores some of the stock sounds, the one you shove in the 'memory card' slot at the front of the machine?

Again, this is just storage, not RAM (memory) - the MPC1000 uses CF cards for storage, plus the internal hard drive if you have one. RAM is a different thing, it's what you load your stored samples into so that you can actively work on a project. The more RAM you have, the more samples you can load into memory.

It sounds like you only have the stock RAM installed (16MB). You will need to upgrade this to 128MB using either the official Akai upgrade, or using third party RAM. See the sticky at the top of this forum for recommendations.

okay, that makes sense. i do have the 128mb CF card, plus i added the internal hard drive. thanks for the tip about upgrading the RAM, i'll definitely look into that. i think that was my problem all along

In laymans terms:
Your Hard Drive is your "fixed" storage for your samples/programs/etc.
The Compact Flash is your "portable" storage if you need to take anything with you.
The expandable RAM (16MB factory/128MB upgrade) is your "working" storage for real time sample loading and editing.

The RAM goes into the slot on the bottom of the MPC, there is a guy (ITSupply) on eBay that sells them for $10.50 which is the best price I've seen, and they appear to be the Akai OEM upgrade.
