Whats wrong with my needles - best needle for sampling hot?

I'm currently using Ortofons to sample (cause thats whats on my tables), problem is, I seem to be picking up nothing but the scratches on the record, even after adjusting the mid and high frequencies on my mixing board the problem persists. Should I go for a cheaper needle to get a richer sound???

I just use a Shure Hi-Fi needle, and they're actually a lot more expensive then DJ needles. Also, I ones read an interview with DJ Shadow where he gave this tip not to use a DJ needle for sampling, but a Hi-Fi needle.

It depends on what u are sampling really.
for drums and bass I use my shure -447's super high output and it gives my samples that PUNCH from jump.

Cool, I think that may be the problem, my current needles seem to be commpressing the hell out of the sound and leaving nothing but the mids as left overs.

UPDATE: Maybe someone else will find this useful, I just picked up a used Vestax PMCPro05 Mixer and it has cured the problem with the blaring mids/crackling highs....interesting, seems that my mixer was the problem, the PMC sounds great by the way, super rich and quiet. Peace.
