Sample Clearance

I just recently purchased a MPC1000. I have made several beats using looped samples from old soul music. What is the best (and most affordable) procedure for clearing these samples to be used on a retail album that i'm working on?

Depends on how RETAIL its going to be?
If its MAJOR then You need to join that Artist Union thing and MPCS and all that sh1t, if its MINOR then just release it as it is! RAGS!
It cost more money to sue you than its costs for you to pay them if your not making much money on the product.

Do a search on the forum about "sample clearing" and on the net there should be loads of info about it.

Personally I would drop it without clearances ! ! especially if your samples are hard to tell what they are.

Here's a good story:

Artist :Peter Gunz & Lord Tariq

Song: Deja Vu

Sampling Artist: Steely Dan

Sampled Song: Black Cow

Exhibit A: The group release the song independently through Coedine Records and makes noise regionally. Sample used, no clearance... no problem

Exhibit B: The group negotiates with a major label (Sony/Columbia) because they wanna really "cake off" this hit which is now on the radio 1,000,000 times a day regionally and growing.

Exhibit C: Group seals the major label deal but to get that hit on the album (which the label is now banking on to sell the album) they must get sample clearance.

Exhibit D: Sample clearance is given by Donald Fagen from Steely Dan with an agreement for 100% of publishing from the song going to him and not Gunz or Tariq (their names/publishing aren't even listed as writers/publishers of their own song).

Exhibit E: Song becomes a national smash yet Gunz & Tariq are out of a major label deal with little money to show for it.

Exhibit F: Back to the independent route in search of our next big hit...minus samples

sometimes there isnt any contact adress on the back of the album?

just contact the harry fox agency.
you can get just about any sampled cleared at a low price

exhibit A: madlib....half the cats he sampled from made one underground funk album in the 70s, pressed 1000 copies, and are now living as busdrivers for the only school in a 25 mile radius of there backwoods town in alabama. you think mo higgins was covered by ASCAP?? he flipped an eritrean (sp?) sample from an african 70s album. that about says it all. now if you loop issac hayes walk on by then thats a different story. but if u actually DIG u can get away with it. if u are producing the next g unit album...well, youre probably gonna have to clear those obscure samples too..if u can even find the person holding rights. im assuming by you 'looping old soul' we're talking about millie jackson and al green type shit. dig harder = u wont have to worry about it at all...loop al green = if it gets big you have to shell out
