MPC 1000 file extensions

Hi all,

I'm sorry if this has been answered, but I couldn't find it with the search function. Recently I got my first MPC (the 1000 model) off of ebay and the guy who sold it threw in a memory card with his sample library as a bonus, but there are 16k+ samples and they are really unorganized. I'm talking names more than 16 characters, incompatable BD and SR, dead folder branches, and incompatible file formats.

Now, I know the MPC 1000 uses 44.1/16 .wav files, and also has .SEQ, .PGM, and .ALL files, but are there any other file extension?

Basically I am working thru this library renaming, organizing, converting and deleting and I am running across all kinds of file extensions: .sf2, .xml, .nki, .kit, .exs, .fxp, .sxt, .IPT, .PRJ, and on & on like this. For now I have been extracting all these files to a file on my Mac titled 'useless?' to figure out what I'll do with them later, but I want to avoid erasing any necessary files. My plan is to reformat the card in the MPC and then reload my reconstructed library tree - I would hate to mess it up and have to do all this work again.

I imagine this sounds pretty basic, but I am new to programing and sequencing. I started off playing instruments and took up the turntables as well, so I've usually just played my music then produced it separately; I've never produced using MIDI. So since most of my production work has been 'post', I know very little about programer/sequencers like the MPC 1000 - but I really can't wait to learn! Thanks for your time and help.

PRJ, SEQ, MID, PGM, SND, WAV, ALL, APS, IPT are the 1000 specific files, but other MPC format files may also work (AKP for example).

The 1000 will ignore anything it can't read, it won't even show up in the LOAD screen

As an aside, I would bet heavily that most of those samples are commercial sample libraries, judging by the use of more than 16 character file names, kontakt extensions etc. If so, just be aware that the seller would not have the rights to 'transfer' the license for those samples to you whether you specifically paid him for the samples or not. Just saying....

Awesome! Thanks for answering my question so well! Btw, thanks for the heads up about the samples. I don't think it will be a problem since I'm not selling my music and I probably won't use the sample CDs anyways. If anything I'll probably get in hot water for sampling my vinyl: the Doors, JB, the Pharcyde, etc, etc. (and those ones are really recognizable ). Right now I'm just nobody making no money, but if someone wants to exploit my art for money (i.e. a big label signs me haha) I guess I'll have to cross the copyright bridge then .
