Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

Apologies if this has been gone through before.

I've recently upgraded my flash to 2GB and upgraded the RAM to 256mb (PC100/PC133 SDRAM 144PIN LAPTOP MEMORY IBM ). I did have some issues fitting the RAM so I was worried that I've damaged it during the installation (however, apart from one folder which froze the mpc every time when i tried to load samples from it, the new RAM seems to work fine)

The last two times I've Unable to save projects (entire mem.) or anything; I just get a "SYSTEM ERROR!" message or "DIRECTORY ERROR!." I think the cause of this is that every time I connect the MPC up to my laptop to add samples, existing samples have filled up the directory. They still occupy the folders from which they've came from but've been copied, perhaps due to me saving improperly?? (I've been doing save entire mem. >> New Folder etc and it seems to work). Should I have reformatted the mpc imbetween changing the RAM? When I delete the sample files from the directory they just come back later.

Mostly likely your RAM is loose. Its a gentle process. Did you ram the RAM into the slot or did you use feather-like caressing skills?

Turn it on and read the screen at load up. Does it say 16MB or 128MB? If neither then houston we have a problem. Make sure the RAM is snugged in.

Let us know.

Hey,
ok that makes some sense. When I load it up:
MPC500 Start-up
MPC owned by: Apprentice.

So is it supposed to state RAM size at start up?

When I changed the RAM I TRIED to insert it really carefully, as I'd readthey're easy to damage. But I ended up forcing the bugger in after a long time. It clicked in nicely so I thought I may as well try it out. Seemed to work like I said...

Yeah, you have the custom name on. Set it to default and it'll say what RAM capacity the 500 is working with. Where it reads Apprentice, should read 16 or 128MB if set to default which is in Other Mode.

If nothing fell off then the RAM is ok, but using force can bend pins and blades which can contact other circuitry causing farts and glitches. It can be fixed by bending them back in shape but be very very gentle not to break off pieces. Other than that, it can be your CF card as well. Which one are you using?

Attempted to reset the start to default to see if it showed me RAM size... couldn't work it out. My new CF card is a hama 2GB 9MB/s.

Oh and I doubt it signifies much but does your mpc give you tiny electric shocks around its corners? Mine does haha
