Bug reports & end-user support for Akai's MPC Software 'controllers' including the new MPC Studio 2, the MPC Touch, MPC Renaissance & original MPC Studio and MPC StudioB lack.

I was wondering if it is possible to create a song with track muting, without actually using the song mode.

I usually have an 8 bar sequence running with a shitload of tracks. I get the most creative arrangements when muting tracks on the fly.

If i have to use song mode it's not really spontaneous thus, to me, a lesser complex arrangement.

Another problem that occurs when using song mode: When the next sequence starts to play, some samples (one shots) from the previous sequence are still playing till it reaches the end of that particular sample

So you're basically building a lot of tracks ->export them to protools and make arrangements in pro tools by muting specific tracks?

Do you run the outputs of the renaissance through an interface/preamps into protools? You're not using the export seperate tracks function?

No I just run my main outs into a track on protools, and record my performance, where I'm switching through sequences, muting tracks, and doing other things on the mpc, it just gets recorded into Protools. You can separate the tracks if you want but I don't do that when I work like this.

Never tried that. I assume you can run them to a daw internally through the mpc software.

So in a nutshell: you're basically running a sequence and do the trackmute tricks and directly record it into protools

Thanks for your time!

Do you by accident know who to make a sample from the previous sequence stop when you play the next sequence directly after it? If im real time switching sequences the one shot sample from the previous sequence continue playing till the sample actually stops.

Are you assigning your mute groups to pads within drum program mode?

Thanks. yeah i understand that i have to have the program on the same track.

But I need it to cut it off when I go to a next sequence using a different program on a different track. The only work around is to put a ghost note to the beginning of the next sequence?

Im not working with mute groups. Only mute tracks.

Assign the long sample pad to a mute group. Then assign another sample to the same mute group cut off the long sample.

If the 2nd sample that you have assigned is recorded on the 1 of the 1st bar within next sequence it will cut of that long sample.

*To assign Mute Groups locate the Pad Play Modes section of the Drum Program edit window on the (MPC OS Software). Here you will see a drop down menu of numbers from 1-32.

Make sure that both sampled pads are assigned to the same muted group number.

Ok that makes sense. thanks!

Another problem i stumbled upon when using track muting. (or maybe it's more general)

I Have a hihat on group mute 1 and my kick is also assigned to group mute one. They are both on seperate tracks. First I lay down the hats. after that the kick. The kick cuts the hat off, like it should be. But when I track mute the kick, you'll still here the cut off hihat.

When using the mpc2500 the hats will play in its complete form after you track mute the kick. Is this a new workaround?

Mutes within the MPC Renaissance.
1.Track Mutes 2.Track Group Mode 3. Pad Mutes 4.Pad Group Mode 5.Mute Groups 6.Mute Target

All 6 have different functions.

Recording Track Mutes within a desired Sequence:
Access with the Track Mute/Pad Mute Button on the Ren. Hardware

1.Track Mutes: In Track Mute Mode, you can define track mutes and track mute groups to use with the pads. You can mute/unmute individual tracks in a particular program in real time by hitting the pads.
This is useful when you have several instruments assigned to different tracks, and you wish to use the pads to switch tracks on/off while playing a song.

2.Track Group Mode: You can set up track mute groups to mute or unmute multiple tracks simultaneously.
This is useful when you wish to mute a group of tracks, or simultaneously isolate a group of specific tracks. Up to 16 different mute groups can be created.

Recording Pad Mutes for a Sequence:

3.Pad Mutes: You can mute/unmute individual sounds in a particular program on a particular track in real time by hitting the pads.
This is useful when you have several samples assigned to different pads and you wish to remove a particular sound, or isolate specific drum hits.

4.Pad Group Mode:You can set up pad mute groups to mute or unmute multiple pads simultaneously.
This is useful when you have several samples assigned to different pads and you wish to mute a group of sounds, or simultaneously isolate a group of specific drum hits. Up to 16 different mute groups can be created.

Mutes within a desired Drum Program
Access via the Prog Edit Button on MPC Ren Hardware

5.Muted Groups:You can assign the selected pad to one of the 32 available MUTE
GROUPs. When pads assigned to the same mute group receive MIDI notes, the last note played will mute any other sounding instrument of that mute group.
Use this function to program realistichi-hats, especially if only the open or closed hat should be heard.
*Also used for Cutting off Long Samples

6.Mute Target: can be set to work only in one direction.
