jjos mpc5000

I think we all agree the 2500 with jjos is the most incredible machine out there. there is nothing that even comes close. but it has one fundamental problem, processing power. just imagine what jj could do if there was more power. the 5k has it!

has anyone been in contact with jj regarding this?

what is keeping him from doing it, funding, lack of source code, lack of interest, legal issues?

anyone have any info on the original developers?

any other useful information?

There's been many posts about this already where programmers have confirmed that unless JJ was directly involved in the 5000 OS, it would be effectively impossible and impractical for him to do anything with it. And as far as we know, JJ was not involved.

Personally I feel his time and skills would be better spent with a different manufacturer working on a new hardware unit. After all, these MPCs are no longer made, and many of the parts are also NLA. That's not going to appeal to anyone looking to ensure a return of investment on his time and resources.

While this would be a fun, tinkering project for someone (but ultimately futile), I would have thought it would be far better for JJ to be part of a team innovating something new and more forward thinking.

I do agree with you, but what project!? 99% of the new stuff is all feature overstuffed computer based sh... that just simply takes the fun out of making music. in my opinion anyway. It took me 12 year to discover the MPC (can you believe that!), and it makes me smile every time I turn it on. I used to MIDI sequence everything on my Elektron boxes. Now I record it as audio tracks into the MPC and do the arrangement there. It´s fantastic! Except that the performance gets really bad as you go 10+ audio tracks. And a stereo track eats up 2 voices on a persistent basis. So it is really the hardware limitation that withholds its incredible potential. Some more CPU/voices = bye bye computer for good

THe project doesn't currently exist yet, but if a manufacturer was looking to make an MPC-style standalone hardware unit, with innovative use of more modern tech (e.g. touch screens) while retaining the simplicity of an MPC, I'm sure having JJ on the team would be a very positive decision

JJ + LinnDrum 2 would be awesome.
