Hiya,

I'm sorry if this has been covered before, I'm just amidst noting down settings on my current programs for free os, and then i'm buying the upgrade for 2xl. i heard that if you do that, you also get version 3 bundled in.
I was just wondering what you guys think are the most killer features of 2xl / 3, and why you've chosen to stick with one or the other? I'm making hip-hop, and whilst i'm disappointed with the fx on the 1000, i really love chopping and sequencing samples AWAY FROM A COMPUTER! Main inspirations are DJ Shadow, Nujabes and J Dilla.

Thanks for your time everyone.

There is a OS comparison chart and that will get most of the way there.
I moved from XL to 3 for a few reasons, bigger chord bank being one of them.
People generally prefer the NDC in XL from what I see around here, but I find the NDC ok and usually destructive chop anyways instead. That is more about your own workflow and we can't really answer that for you. Just try both and see what you like.

Well, if both are new for you, I don't know if you could tell the difference between them. Very much stuff is added since free os (basically it's cleaned up Akai OS + global program mode).
They are not much different in terms of features, which are just more or less extended. I just stay for Xl now, as I had enough of constant upgrading.. Today's Xl is generally a stabile OS, it do what I needed for my MP to do. Can't talk about OS3 as I didn't used it more than 30seconds. I'm also very used to enter data with a q-link 1 (works like jog wheel in program mode) which is not on OS3 as I checked once.

I'm not sure :hmmm: but reading about latest updates on os3/128xl, I think this comparison in not updated, somebody take a look and give JJ a shout about it..

I'm not sure if freeJJ does it, but 2xl has a save option that will export your settings to a file on your card that you can reload after upgrading or switching OS'.

This is especially useful if you'd like to go back and forth between 2xl and OS3, but also just useful in general so that you dont have to redo them every time you upgrade or if some setting gets wonky on you. So that instead of fishing around for what you changed by accident you can just reload your setting file.

As far 2XL or 3,
2xl is stable but its also finalized as far as functions that will be available.
It might save you frustration, especially while your still learning the more advanced features to stay with the stable one.

Or maybe you want to learn along with OS3 as it matures.
OS3 will be the future of the 1000 OS.

One thing you should consider though is that when you make a beat on either 2xl or os3,
it wont load exactly into the other OS because the program functions are slightly different.
It can be done, but it would be easier to plan to keep whatever beat you made on the OS you made it with.

I suppose it would depend what kind of beats you make also.
If you make straight forward meat and potatoes stuff OS3 works fine.
If your doing sophistimicated stuff,
maybe stable would be better.

I am sure they will sooner or later. With OS3 changing a bit then maybe they need to wait till they know whats in it :hmmm: but its pretty good if a bit out of date.

Good look. I was about to get it just to have it. Why isn't it compatible? BLASPHEMY! I got PRJ's for days!! jj's slippin'

Not slippin at all.
I'm sure complete compatibility with the old code is secondary to making the new code the best it can be.
And its not "incompatible" so much as the last time I checked (a much earlier build) the pad assignments were a little different, like up one or something.

But now that I think about it, that might only be a problem for the way I use programs.
I put a bunch of drum sounds and samples in one program, so when I move that program to the other OS all the drums are triggered wrong. But which can be fixed by adjusting the sample assignments.

But I think the way most people do it, and generally considered the proper way is to have one sound per program. In that case there might not be much difference except everything possibly being shifted up or down a key.

That actually might not be a problem to worry about at all.

If you've got 2xl, os3 is free.
Give it a try.

Skywalkerogiesel wrote:... I would definitely try 3 but I do some rather intricate programming myself (layering, routing, etc.) If it was a seamless transition that would be cool but no sense in fixing something that ain't broken.

Thats why a lot of people are staying on 2XL for now.
But the 3 is pretty intricate also, its got a few tricks that 2xl doesn't do.
I think I read somewhere that its intended to be a little more all around production centered like what a daw would do then traditional MPC drum machine centered.

If you export and back up your settings, you can throw os3 on there for an hour and make a quick beat and play around with the menus and stuff and then put 2XL back on and reinstall your settings an hour later. And since 2XL is still being bug fixed pretty regularly you should be reinstalling that fairly often anyway.

The other most obvious on the face difference I noticed in OS 3 other then the pad assignment (I didn't dig into the functions deeply, I'm not that technical) was the instrument program is also reconfigured.
It actually seemed to be more advanced than the 2xl version, but me just being a rudimentary plinker on the keys it was mostly over my head. But presumably this may be just what a more sophisticated keyboardist could use.

Yeah, it's absolutely not going to be a seamless transition.
And I agree, that's probably the only reason many people on 2xl aren't trying out 3.

For me, based on the feature charts, 3 doesn't offer enough over 2xl to compensate for both the features that it lacks as well as for the effort of changing over. but that's just me.

I've been running jjos 2 for years and never had to reinstall.. I don't update software on any of my gear though. I just upgrade from time to time. I think the instrument track on 3 allows you to loop up live instruments in real time. I just don't see how that's gonna help a vinyl head. It makes sense that jj would try to make it more of an all in one solution though.

thanks guys, yea loving JJOS2XL at the moment. until I can figure out if there's anything I desperately need from 3, I'll stick with it, the speed and workflow are just sublime and my free os programs load fine.

anyone dithering whether or not to buy it should just buy it, it really feels like it removes a lot of barriers to your creativity.
