Roland SH-32 Synthesizer

Whats the word? Is it any good? I am considering purchasing one and would like to know what you guys think.

avoid its a rompler/pcm which trys to emulate analogue and falls over- use pcm/romplers for recreation of real instruments like pianos etc and specific synth sounds and get either a va or a real analogue for your synth sounds....microkorg or the k-station are more expensive but far far better....for example the sh32 doesnt do real pwm...

forget it ... it has nothing to do with a vintage SH9, SH101, SH2 ut to the SH2000 - they're all sounding much better IMHO - u can't compare these sounds -> get a vintage ore a better sounding "rebuild synthesizer" that it's worth it. Like the Juno-D

the Juno-D is not a synth it's an RS-50 in a black box. do your research it's a cool board if your looking for some bread and butter sounds but if you want a synth it's not the board for you. Don't be fooled by the name.

yeah get an old juno over one of these new juno charlatans....but dont get something with more options...

u can get a sh-32 for like a 100 bucks or less now, its a fun VA to have IMO

i had one for a bit and only got rid of it cuz i had a chance to trade it for a future retro 777
but otherwise id still have it, a fun/cheap lil toy

the Sh32 isn't a romplayer but Juno D is, although the Sh has rom based drum samples its a 4part VA engine based on the JP8000, supersaw and everything, certanly worth haveing sitting around for 100bucks, but there is ofcorse a downside/ I heard there's terrible stepping in the filters, but that's just the hype, I've neverplayed with one, so I can't testify

bad stepping filters, alaising and not real pwm and ring mod...more of a rompler in that sense even if not reliant on the same arcitechture

Don't disregard it completely. Hear me out. I recently bought one. In it's defense: The SH-32 is based on the JP-8000 sound engine. For $250, an SH-32 will add a lot of versatility to your setup. this thing can produce a wide range of sounds and some deep programming capabilities that are common on much more expensive synths. The 32 was geared toward the DJ market which was a big mistake on Roland's end. But their marketing mistake has made a $500 (retail) synth that can easily compete with the MS2000 a mere $200-$250. While the 32 has it's limitations (multi-button functioning, audible stepping on SOME sounds while using the filters) it's also got a LOT going for it. It's small, sounds thick and is very musical. The controller rich surface allows you to create some whacked out sonic soundscapes and effects very easily. The 808 and 909 samples on it are also stellar. it's worth $250 alone for the drum sounds if you're still on the hunt for classic Roland percussion. It's not a good synth if you just want to jerk off with some presets. It's for the tweaker.

Guess it's up to the flip of a coin then. I think I would much rather have a MC-202 for the money, but finding them is difficult in New Zealand. Thanx for your help everybody.

I have one in my set up. I got it for $100bucks. This thing is Great for Drum n Bass . Capable of some real gritty sounds. It is digital but a dirty raw digital. As far as a 202 or a Sh32 , The sh32 is a way more capable synth. The only gripe I have is the stepped filters. This box can make some great Pads,Leads,and Bass's. It is a good alternative to a Ms200 . If you like Prefuse73 Blips and Bleeps ,This is the box to get. I sampled raw wave forms out of this thing and use them in Reason to get some stellar sounds through the NNxt. If you can get one for $100 then buy it, you won't be sorry. It's real easy to edit and will keep you playing with it for a long time. Dig a little deeper and you'll find Gold.
