Getting tracks from the web is good, but I'll only look for the .aiff or .wav version. The odd times I do use MP3's they need processing to "attempt" to give them some natural dirt. Layering with vinyl silence works well.

I've been digging much longer than I've been "making beatz". Strange, after all this time of listening to the music and catching it's inspiration, I finally have something to DO with the music now.

Unfortunately, in my city, there are no LEGIT places. No... ehh... 'true' record/music shops anymore. The CD Exchange is about it, outside of a record store that seems to specialize in metal and local bands. Best spots in town are the Half-Priced Books, hands down. The workers know me by name and, at one store, even pull random shit for me. It's nice, even though some times the music is 100% whack. It's the thought that counts.

It's weird that picking out a few records for <$7 is always a great way to end a **** up day. Even if I don't get around to listening to them right away, it just feels right!

Man, it's been times where I made going to the record store in the next city over a weekend ritual for me. would cop like 10 records at a time and only listen to 1-2 of them fully out of the stack before getting more the following weekend. so I def understand the feeling

I don't dig much like I use to. I try to get out at least once or twice every week. My funds need to be right though to be able to do that. I am lucky to live within 5 minutes from 3 record stores.

So, fam, this Saturday, take some change, find the nearest flea market, pawn shop, garage sale you can, and get dusty, there are no excuses!

Tip shops are one of my fav places, get records for a pittance.

I assume my subconscious is telling me I'm going to have to fish out some dough for christmas. When february comes around i'll be going to back to the spot

I actually really was sitting on the floor while digging at my local record shop. I came there every two or three weeks and spend like 2/3 hours digging through all the crates for some new candy.

And every time I was done they see me walk out with a sleepy leg limp haha. After a year or so copping records there they finally bought 2 "bar" chairs I could sit on with the perfect height to dig in the lower crates. That's the only thing I use while digging, no phone no discogs, no portable record player. just crates and a chair and let the music hit me by surprise.

I do a lot of music history though so that's my second cheat cause you will see a lot of names you recognize and kind of know what kind of music it is.

i go once a month and usually spend 70-100

there's a few dusty market stools and second hand shops around me
most of the actual record shops are a rip off

last summer i found records out in front of people's houses all summer and ended up with over 100 free records. of course most of them ended up being garbage.
i have a hard time spending a lot of money per record when i don't know exactly if there will be a gem or not.

personally, i can't even hear hip hop unless i think it was sampled from vinyl. i know there must be beat makers with tricks and shit to make it sound like vinyl when it's not, or whatever. but when i'm at my station i can't do shit without records. it doesn't feel right otherwise.

Don't have expeditions just to dig like I did when a kid but I can't pass a charity shop without a quick flick through the vinyl and will always go to any big record fair nearby.

For sampling purposes I'm looking for things that are obscure enough that I won't recognise any obvious samples that might have a genuinely hot beat - won't sample just cos something's obscure, though... has to have a top drawer groove. Big band jazz, old exotica, 70s soundtracks, Moog party compilations. Real 50p stuff. Unless it's a good overall record I'll tend not to collect - just grab my samples and sell/donate it on again. Don't have the space for big physical collections these days.

Overseas I will usually Google the city I'm in to see if there are any big used record stores worth checking out.

So I'm a casual digger these days.

Woke up yesterday and decided to take my bull terrier Pepper with on a ride at 4:30am and we drove 10 miles out until I got hungry and Pepper too, for he kept looking in the glove compartment for my Snickers.

Drove up to an all night bakery, and entered and saw an old lady selling folk records from the '40s and '50s. Not american folk but South American and Caribbean folk. I said what the hell, the baker was making our sandwiches so I doved in and bought shit based on the cover and credits. All were mostly guitar and bass with light or no drums. A couple had electric guitar and one with electric keyboard. Paid a dollar each and walked out with eleven records and two roast beef sandwiches. The lady put her hand on my crotch and said come by again and I'll rise your sunshine you crazy kid. I didn't mind, I went again and she stroked my johnson to a pulp, thought I had elephant's disease.

So yeah, I still dig.
