Ian Canefire wrote:If it has midi (like Coz stated) and is less expensive than an Elektron Analog keys or the Rytm then I will buy it. Other than that electron has hit the nail on the head with their analog pieces plus they are out now on the market.

I finally heard the Analog Keys on a youtube vid today without the usual massive reverb that's on a lot of their stuff. It sounds ridiculously good when the oscillators start getting stacked up with a bit of modulation. I'd discount the Sub 37 completely from my shopping list if the AK had a better interface - dedicated knobs and a bigger screen etc. Nice machine though. Very nice.

So I'm thinking they're full-size, too.

Yeah, with micro sliders and micro slider caps you'd be getting splinters!

That is weird. :hmmm:

You have to watch the video of the analog 4 (which is the same as the analog keys) being programmed by the young person then you will see how they think at Elektron.

When I had the Octatrack I was baffled for a long time. These analog ones are a bit better though. Though I don't like that they are not really chord players.

Back to the Arp, my tech guy was telling me the history about the Arp Moog beef. It was interesting to hear Supposedly the Arp was well sealed on the inside so that if you opened it up you wouldn't be able to see that it was a clone of the Moog layout.

Moog sued Arp over this copy of its technique. The Arp odyssey sound is really pleasant to the ear. Those samples that I shared had a few from Arp in there and they sound great. So the MPC 4000 owners may not need to spend the cash. lol

Talented kid, although it sort of illustrates a way of making music that I don't gravitate towards really.

It's surprising how close in tone the Pulse 2 can get to the Odyssey with some of the sounds I've heard. The interface plays a huge part in any instrument though and that's where the Pulse 2 falls down.

huge statement Coz. very cool to see elektron compete that way. i suspect the elektron interface is the learning curve for all of their stuff.

Yeah MPC60Champ was just schooling me on that too. Moog dont play with that filter man. Dr Bob took care of that patent wayyyyyy early on. but i heard the resulting Arp filter is diff from the ladder filter but close in sound. none the less, this thing is sought after for a reason.

Coz id think the sub37 and the Arp is closer in comparison both being paraphonic and possibly having similar filters.

Space is such an issue here now that it's a one in and one out job unfortunately. I want to flip my current 3 octave synth that's been relegated to a controller, and replace it with something of similar size where I'll actually use the sound.

If I was more open to the AK way of working, it'd be in the running purely because of the power and how self-contained it is. It's a luxury having 3 modern analogue synths to choose from. :)

The Swedes have a different way of thinking. If you have ever met one you would know this. That good education-socialist-engineering-non ADHD- dark outside-elctronic music loving, mind set is literally what you are looking at with Elektron. Its almost amazing how culture weaves itself into design.
Just like we are seeing with the Japanese and the roland design model, or the lexus car design model.

I guess the truth is if we want simple awesomeness then we have to design it and not expect another culture to reflect our desires.

The elektron gear is on some music nerd level that is not intuitive for a person with a short attention span who prefers ganja to Colombiana. Plus it has no soul. You want soul you need samples nowadays 'cause the Commodores, Rufus, the GAP band and the Ohio Players sound was not made in an electronic box. Producers are hardly musicians anymore in the classic sense. ( Though the Pharrell music of late is swinging on an old school copy and it is using live music...thus the love for the song "Happy")

So we are seeing people longing for analog because they want a return to the feeling from a less digital time. When the truth is that if you gave the Commodores, the GAP band or Rufus this newer digital gear they would make it sound soulful for sure, mainly based on life experience and mastery alone.

Peace
Ian

PS Stevie Wonder embraced electronic sounds from early on and only used the good stuff.

great point... same as the one many of us have made about "man makes the music, music gear never does."

and to your point on the Elektron nerd stuff. I've met and talked to those guys and they'll admit that they lock in and geek out on the design/tech end and although its all made form a place of love as a musician they dont get a chance to use the gear for making music as much as they'd like so they look towards the musicians to experiment and take it in directions that they hadn't imagined.

This is exciting, I've been buried away in a dark basement playing with all types of analog goodies, but I must say, I hope the Arp clone is better build quality than the ms mini. Had a new one in my hands ready to purchase last Friday, while testing it out two jacks went out as well as the main output jack, and it felt toyish. So I sat back for a another hour, read the bboy tech report on the minibrute, tested that out and grabbed that instead.....wanted the MS badly but it felt horrible to me, I hope the arp is built with a metal case.

It wouldnt surprise me if the next MPC is analog. Just like Korg owns Arp, Akai is affiliated with Alesis. The Andromeda is still sought after.

I think were all ready for the pricetag on the Karp Odyssey
