Reducing sample size - 2KXL

Hi all,

I am a MPC 2000xl user - one of the rare ones that still use floppy disks

I recently purchased a USB Floppy Drive because I found it going cheap. I have been thinking about loading drum WAV files from my macbook onto floppy disks then loading them into my MPC - seemed like an easier way than recording one shots.

Of course, the problem I am facing is that I cannot fit many drum sounds onto the floppy disk in current WAV format. I have downsampled to 44.1 and 16bit but still, I can only fit about 8 - 12 samples max.

Any thoughts on how I can convert the single shot drums sounds so that I can fit more onto the floppy disks?

And before anyone says it - no I haven't thought about upgrading to ZIP or Card Read. It seems a little too hard and I've got along for the moment.

for bringing in samples when space is an issue (floppy disks) it winds up being faster setting up a sampling production line. get into sample mode, and sample every sound right off the bat and then go and trim them. sample in mono, cut the long tails short like on cymbals and stuff... use the decay in the params menu to fix it so it doesn't sound bad. you can usually fit 16 or so drum sounds on a floppy... of various types.

couldnt you speed the sample up so its a lot shorter too? then when its in the mpc, pitch it back down.

i dont really do this much, but people do it to save space.

I use a Zip drive and still speed up my samples like I'm using a floppy drive. If I'm using a wav I speed it up to 200%, drop into MPC then pitch it down to -120. I don't do this on bass samples though!

First thing i would head for, plus it adds flavor to the sample

I don't know if anyone said this already but you can record your samples on mono (L) to reduce the sample size. Speeding up your sample is also a good idea so you can get more with less sampling time. it'll add that "griddy" sound to it if you're into that kind of aesthetic. Also upgrading to ZIP isn't all that too difficult. If you get the external ZIP drive.
