Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

I'm curious to know, out of all the people who've had Zip drives fail on them, were they bought used? I'm wondering if these failures have occurred due to improper use and handling. I'm sure that keeping a Zip drive standing sideways shortens it's life-span. It's also possible that traveling with a Zip drive will shorten it's lifespan.

Keeping a disc inserted in the drive while traveling may help prevent the mechanism from excessive vibrations, just as recommended for floppy discs and similar devices. So a few preventative measures are worth following here to prolong the life of the drive. There's still no guarantee of whether it will help if these drives fail for other reasons that are unknown. But these suggestions won't hurt either.

This is off the topic, but

I think you should consider yourself lucky. No data storage system should be as fragile as ZIP drives, and many cases, ZIP drives would just crap out regardless. I wouldn't mess with Zip drive, unless I have absolutely no choice.

I've heard so many horror stories with ZIP drives when Zip disk was popular. (like, a DOA ZIP disk delivered by messenger...) On one really liked ZIPs, it was popular just because it was cheaper then other options. (Syquest EZ drive was other horrible one, but that's other story.)
On the contrary, MO drive never failed me, and I don't know any one who had a bad experience with MOs. It is a good example that good technology doesn't always prevail market share. (MO was very popular in Japan though.)

Back to the topic, in my opinion, MPC2000 classic should be much cheaper than XL. To me, XL is what 2000 Classic should have been.
By the way, I don't believe that MPC2000 classic and XL sound different. (I had 2000 Classic, and I currently own XL.)

You mean a Jaz drive? That sounds like an excellent deal.

right a jaz drive. that one actually failed so i bought another off ebay which is now giving me trouble. i don't know if they make new jaz drives, do you? all i've got are used. but i'd pay for a new one since the classic doesn't have any other storage options that i'm aware of.

Jaz and Zip are fairly unreliable.

You can use many different types of SCSI storage devices, it doesn't have to be Jaz.

Nah. Be the same. Well. I don't know, if you have like some crazy hearing you could technically notice a difference, just in the age of the circuits/way things were built.

But as for any type of sounding thicker and that, or as they say warmer, nah.

I think it's the feel/look and size of the units that add to the placebo of sounding better.

And your welcome
:-D

that's completely false

In all cases I'm talking minty or extremely well cared for machines. In both cases there's a lot of them out there, even factoring the lined ones.

and these are the same price points I work off of with these models, the 1k also falls into 350-450 range at most for me

Don't just say it's false and leave it at that. If it's wrong, correct it so both of us know better then.

The converters on all three are different, of course they will sound different, slightly noticeable to a producer or critical listener, not at all to the general public, but nothing major at all.

To get back on the price of these 2K classics, I bought mine a year ago for €380 / $522 / GBP 313.
but mine came with the 8-outs, eb-16, a good screen(as of yet) and the Flash-rom.
Had to replace the floppy drive though.
still loving it, its my main piece.

What do you think of the flash-ROM?

Any idea which exact make/model the flash-ROM is, as in Akai FMX008 or FMX008M, or Mutec FMC-01?

I paid 220 quid for mine.
No 8 outs
No extra ram.
No Fx board.

Ive seen 2000's go for as little as £140
But if some one i'snt asking at least 200 quid there is probably something wrong with it, in my opinion.

You realy want to get one thats not been used too much, and uselessly you can sense this by the pictures and wording of a listing.

I was lucky , mines in virtuouly new condition. not hammered, and apart from one of the tacts not always clicking seems to have been unused for ...what...1997? a long time

Like some one said
Keep you marriage intact, bid on what you can afford, but snipe it, keep stum, bid in the last 5 seconds.
I would say 200 quid is what Id' pay for a 2000
But it's about having 200 quid at the same time that some one else needs 200 quid
Get me fam?

Just make sure you don't get a battered one.

Blesss up : )

Well I only use it for the 1.71 OS. I used to save some drum hits on it, but I noticed I would create an empty program right away..

Don't know what version it is, should have checked when I was replacing the floppy drive...

Hey guys! Just found these forums and hope to learn some more stuffs about my ol' MPC 2000. I am an original owner of mine and bought it maybe in '99? I've used it off and on and just recently bought a FX board for it. I used to have some decent gear but my late brother hocked most of it. So now all I have is a 486 computer, Roland MT-32 and my trusty 2000. I can say after using my 2000 for over 10 years, not only does it have it's own sound, but it's own groove as well. That groove has pretty much stayed from the 60 from what I understand. DJ Shadow's Endtroducing has alot of that groove feel. Glad to find other owners like myself as I had thought about getting rid of it a couple of times, but now for sure I'm holding on to it.

Welcome to the forums!
My first MPC was a 2000xl, and I never got into. Sold it after a half a year of not using it. tried machine out for a while but it didnt click either.
Somehow I ended up buying a 2000classic and I love it. pretty weird but it just clicked with me, or the timing was right this time
