New user, should i learn with Akai OS or JJOS?

Ok i picked up a MPC500 for $40 bucks from a pawn shop and fell in love with the way it works.
So today I picked up MPC2500 for $550.

It has the Akai OS, as i'm learning should I update to JJOS right now or is it better to learn on Akai OS and then migrate when im ready (is JJOS harder to get to grips with for a beginner as it has heaps more features?).

Free JJOS is virtually identical to Akai OS, so at a minimum I'd go for that. JJOSXL is more complex and a very different OS so I suggest you install the free trial and see what you think. Either way I've written books to help with both OS:

Also does free have any major limitations, like not being able to save songs or seq?

Free JJOS has no limitations and fixes bugs in the Akai OS. Has some extra features as well. Check out JJ's site for the comparison chart.

On Akai OS there's a high probability you will end up with corrupted files and folders..

I remember also being unsure on which OS to use in the beginning (had the MPC for about a year now). If the latest OS's seem confusing at first, I'd recommend the following upgrade path:

1. the free JJOS
2. JJOS1 (you get a free licence for OS1 by buying an OSXL licence)
3. OSXL

Be aware that while the free JJOS is already useful (mass editing of pad parameters, faster chopping), it only supports a small number of simultaneous programs (16 max IIRC). Also bear in mind that drum programs that you make might not be 100% compatible with the various OS's, so you don't want to be constantly switching OS's
