Ensoniq ASR-10 help, for ASRonians.

I’m glad that Microsoft made a function to run programs like the other windows.

Won't work for every software, you'll find out once you dive in to it. Also, in the case you like to create Floppy's. You can't perform this over USB with a USB Floppy drive. You need a OLD pc with a FLOPPY DRIVE CONTROLLER on the motherboard.

The reason for this is because you need to write LOW-LEVEL on the floppy's.

I have chickensys and it doesnt work well on my PC and MAC, I cant transfer sounds from a Ensoniq FS CD to ZIP. I can read the Ensoniq file system but the only thing I can create is the OS.....

It's a headache. Believe me, an old PC will save you some struggles. But maybe you're lucky and it will work instantly for you. Some users don't experience problems.

I can do everything with PC's and working in IT for 10+ years, but this is like the old days troubleshoots.

quick question but I'm UK based, if I buy a German ASR-10 what power plug do I need?.

European (Germany) to UK plug adapter…

Cool, could I use my psu plug from my mpc 1000?.

So same voltage?, last thing I want to do is blow it up

With EnsoniqFS (plugin for total commander) or Chickensys.

Please let me know if you got it working. I've asked this very similar question but nobody responded yet.

EnsoniqFS isnt working for me neither is Chickensys. I need an old PC... it just doenst work right.

Looking for ASR-10.. Let me guys know what it should include. I guess the output expander is pretty good for tracking. Max memory? Scsi? Else?

The most important upgrade is the SCSI port, RAM is easy to get hold of and cheap. Without SCSI you'll be saving/loading to/from multiple floppies which is a right old PITA.

If you are offered one without SCSI it needs to be dirt cheap, or free lol.

Look out for an ASR-X with SCSI also, to me they sound exactly the same.

Thanks, just what i thought. How about os, is there any difference? ASR-X would be okay, but i'm looking for those keys also to play synths and easily chop samples to 61 pieces.

Edit: What is reasonable price for ARS-10 with scsi and good condition today?

here's my 2 cents for what they are worth...

I've owned the EPS Classic, EPS 16+ and ASR-10. I currently own the ASR-10.

To me, the most important thing to have is an ASR-10 in good/excellent condition with the Maxed Memory for the most sample time.

You can make a beat on the ASR-10, then midi sync it to your DAW of choice and dump your beat in with your sounds separate (even without the 8 output expander), then save it in your DAW. I don't even bother saving to SCSI or Floppies (Never did on any of my Ensoniq Samplers).

You can also sample VST synths, samples, etc... into the ASR-10, use it for the Excellent Effects, Filters, etc... they play from the ASR-10 and record back into your DAW in real time what you want. This is a great method for getting a fatter, warmer, wider, analog sound, plus the Effects, Filters and overall sound of the ASR-10 are Excellent!

You can still make it work without SCSI, most def.

Just dont expect to find a SCSI expansion to upgrade later, it aint happening.

I just managed to convert Ensoniq CD images to ZIP drive using my dad;s old 32bit winxp machine. I'm so happy, now I'm looking for a good instructional video or manual to learn to create my own sounds. The sounds can be so amazingly fat! There are some drumkits I have that sound so realistic, how did they produce this?

Main question:

Is there a cat on this board that creates his own sounds on the ASR? (Looping, ADSR etc..) I really like to learn that.

So if, how do I take e.g. a D note and roll this down the keyboard and create all the notes I need?

This machine is a bigger beast I thought it was! I was only using this as a effects array and resampling my kick/snares. But it is so much more that that lol, I feel a bit sorry for the poor machine.

In no particular order, d note ws key range lo =c2, hi =c7, standard pitch. I can't remeber off the top of my head where in the menus these commands are but I've done that many times decades ago. Ie taking 1 note and spreading it across the whole keyboard. It will only sound natural a few keys up and a few keys down though.

I will try it tonight, I've seen a youtube vid featuring a guy taking a sample with some flute note from vinyl and spreading it over the keys. Would be awesome to achieve that cuz it sounded baddass!
